If you're shocked by a lot of what's going on, it's because you're deficient in your understanding of very basic Civil War history, so the first thing you should do right now is go remedy that.
Here's a free hint: elections matter hugely for legitimacy around here, on both sides.
It is in the interest of all of society, save a very small sliver of dumb rich assholes, for the regulatory environment to favor businesses that are large enough to benefit from economies of scale and comply with regulations, but too small to buy legislators and surveil employees.

IME there are no real _solutions_ to this situation or the way it chews up your brain, but often it's just 'these people are pathologically conflict-averse' or 'a drifting apart that has no single cause or remedy'.
At the end of the day, it's usually not about us.
