it's disability pride month
so I'd better not see you fuckers being casually ableist
for a short primer, this includes words like "stupid" "lame" "insane" "crazy" and phrases like "are you blind?!" and "falling on deaf ears"
real quick solution, use accurate language. or just shut your mouth
I've been trying to adjust this for years. It's a struggle because you hear it so often, but I keep chipping away at it bit by bit because it's a worthwhile effort
Feel free to call me on it, I want to improve!
i feel it. i still occasionally find it coming out of my mouth.
just the other day I called something "stupid" and then immediately corrected myself by saying it was silly.
I'm doing my best!
I realized recently that a lot of the words I was guided to as “appropriate” alternatives to cursing are actually super ableist so I’ll be saying “fuck” a lot more
Did… did you really just casually (and metaphorically) use “blinded” in response to the post encouraging people to be aware of the ableist language in everyday speech?
I have been really trying to avoid this language altogether since I learned about it last year (embarrassingly late in life). If I ever use it again, I apologize in advance (and again, I’m actively trying not to)
Signed,
-A Mediocre White Dude
Exactly!
I think it really helped that I learned about it (from @knilirabaj.bsky.social) in the context of Elorn Mask being a goof on Twitter and avoid using ableist language with him was challenge mode level difficulty.
oh definitely. Link is good people.
I've definitely had words over how people refer to Elon and Trump and etc.
i dgaf if they're terrible people, we don't mock their appearance, disabilities, nor use ableism or bigotry against them.
The best thing about the English language is that there is ALWAYS another word available for the word you're trying to use. It does take some effort to modify the language you use, but it's something that should be done regardless.
I wanna clarify some things. Is "idiotic" a valid substitute for "stupid" and is it okay to call non-human events and things "insane" or "crazy"? Like, if someone does something really cool and skillful, is it okay to say "that was insane"?
All of these things are ableist use of language.
Alternatives:
- ignorant
- thoughtless
- careless
- an asshole/dick (because I’d it really their intelligence? Or are they just an asshole?)
- bonkers
- wild
- mind-boggling
- bananas
- incredible
- unbelievable
- astounding
I don't see how ignorant or asshole/dick are ableist. Ignorant refers to lack of knowledge. It has nothing to do with how your brain works. Asshole/dick doesn't have anything to do with disabilities at all.
