Historical Marker Ahead

Yes, I’m pulling the car over to look at plaques. I’ll be just a minute. Not a historian, but did minor in history at Indiana University.

Anpanman, a beloved children’s character in Japan who is an anthropomorphic piece of bread with red bean paste, was born out of the deprivation its creator felt in a WWII prison camp. So, why Anpanman’s superpower is others eating a slice of him to gain strength museum.anpanman-acm.co.jp/sphone/en/
OK besides this below and DEVO coming out of the Kent State massacre, what are other facts you have about the evolution of art / music /etc that wouldn't be obvious if you didn't know but, retroactively, explain and/or illuminate a LOT ?

The United States has always been a democracy for some and a brutal authoritarian regime for others, and the effort to expand it to democracy for all has led to a 70+ year backlash culminating in SCOTUS claiming that kings are totes cool and also judges are the ones to coronate them

I keep coming back to "all this for literally Donald Trump," but it fits. There's not some more competent aspiring autocrat who'd somehow "earn" or "win" this. This is how it has always gone: feckless/evil elites attaching themselves to the sociopath they believe will get them where they want to go.

U.S. Supreme Court rules all Revolutionary War-themed markers need to clarify whether King George was doing an official act

According to my originalist reading of the plain text of the constitution, what the founders really fuckin loved was kings

supreme court rules that fighting a whole-ass war about not being ruled by a king is overturned

Indianapolis today celebrates the late mid-century modern architect Avriel Shull. She has a plaque for Ladywood Estates, but I knew her from Thornhurst addition in Carmel, because one of my best HS friends grew up there. You might know her from this Kokomo home www.coldwellbanker.com/in/kokomo/33...

Markers last, too, and the current environment makes it even more critical they capture the truth of what they’re memorializing
One of the interesting things about the Internet is that we’re actually living through a dark age. Future historians are unlikely to have records of this period. Paper and ink last. Digital storage, less so. variety.com/2024/tv/news...

If you go to your local park, you’ll probably find a historical marker dedicated to someone who died young, or visited the park a lot, or both. Here’s a sample of plaques on benches around the pond at Fort Lowell Park in Tucson, Arizona, that can make you imagine them still sitting there.

As legislators work to remove or suppress Black history in schools, it is appearing with frequency on historical markers. Here is a thread of new markers from the past few weeks: 🧵

“Most bridges over the Chicago River are trunnion bascule bridges known throughout the world as ‘Chicago Style’” because if you put ketchup on one the locals yell at you and call you a jagoff

Stevens Point, Wisc.: Took a walk through the local UW campus tonight and found in front of Old Main an anodyne rock marker to a governor’s swearing-in. A little ways behind that building is a note the school was built on a burial ground for relocated indigenous people that also was a garbage dump.

Westmont, Illinois: I highly recommend Uncle Bub’s for their roast turkey sandwich and peach cobbler, and for anyone doing a tour of filming locations for the Larry the Cable Guy vehicle “Witless Protection”

Classic HMA of Yo, Adrian
Philadelphia: More than four decades after the release of “Rocky,” people still run up the Museum of Arts steps and thrust their arms to the sky and dance in triumph. And they can’t go witout a visit to Pat’s in South Philly to stand where Rocky stood. (Please note my cheesesteak pun.)

Classic HMA of a road travelled
Cornwall, NY: After 444 days held hostage in Iran, 52 Americans arrived back in U.S., where they reunited with family at West Point. The 1980-81 crisis gave us such enduring touchstones as ABC’s “Nightline,” the October Surprise and Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman.” www.nytimes.com/1981/01/26/u...

Classic HMA from the last time the U.S. had the vibe of A House Divided
Ottawa, Ill.: 3 markers note the 1st of the famed Lincoln-Douglas debates. I was taught they were a high-minded mark of pre-Civil War discourse. No one mentioned, say, Douglas egging on the crowd with claims Lincoln wanted to overrun Illinois with Black people www.nps.gov/liho/learn/h....

My church on Sunday
Tucson, Ariz: El Tiradito is a shrine dedicated to a sinner buried in unconsecrated ground. It’s a shrine to remember and be in touch with society’s and organized Christianity’s outcasts—a remembrance for Nex Benedict was held here. Truly, a holy place.

Phoenix — No marker, but it’s easy to find the site of the bar where Ernesto Miranda, of warning fame, was stabbed to death. It’s now the sportsbook entry to a basketball arena. No word on whether Miranda’s assailant stood over his body and mocked: “You have the right to remain silent.”

The Indiana Racing Memorial Association sponsors historical markers that tell the story of the state’s rich auto racing history. The latest, dedicated June 8, is for the late Indy 500 announcer Bob Jenkins, whom I once had the pleasure of interviewing for IU’s alumni mag racingmemorial.org/markers/

Enjoy Classic HMA, where I post a thread of previously posted markers. Up first:
Danbury, Neb.: This was the sign, truly in the middle of nowhere, that got me interested and thinking about historical markers: who put them up, when, why, and how the story would change depending on the answers to those questions. For example, someone other than white surveyors in the 1960s.

Keeping the historical and setting aside the marker: Dolly Parton indeed has largely stayed out of politics but the one time she weighed in big was as one of many artists with super patriotic 9-11/Iraq War songs or albums. Enjoy Dolly doing “Ballad of the Green Beret” youtu.be/rzNCkM17QIA?...
Dolly Parton could reach out and take a US Senate seat, yes, even here in TN, if she wanted to. The reason she doesn't is that she has much better things to do with her life. Trying to drag her into politics is the dumbest own-goal imaginable in the event it works.
