"Independence from Britain" is the world's most celebrated holiday.
"you're not American why do you care about the 4th of July" mate I'm Indian, any day someone got the Brits to fuck off back to their country is a national holiday for me

Dear Scotland: you can join this club anytime!

Wish Australia and New Zealand would 😢

Greetings from Sydney. Amen to that. It's bloody galling that an Australian child cannot aspire to be head of state. King Charles and Queen Camilla of Australia doesn't roll easily off the tongue

Scotland could join an independence from England club, but that’s a different club.

honestly the best way i have ever heard this holiday pitched.

Just saw a stat that says a country celebrates its independence from Britain ~every 6 days
Avatar
Yep, quick google search says 62 countries have gained independence from Britain
Avatar
Thought I’d help out the Brit’s and give them a pic so they would have something to post today. 🇺🇸

We need to get together and create an international holiday en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

I feel that if Australia day were pitched as a "semi-independence from Britain" type holiday it would go over a lot better than it currently dues with the ongoing counter-pitch of "Isn't Invasion Day more accurate?" Sadly I doubt Britain would agree.
Avatar
Most British people wouldn’t care.

I hesitantly propose there would even be a demographic who would reply with "Good riddance!" Unfortunately they're not the demographic that have our political leaders on speed dial.

Hope to see "It's Just England, Now, And Frankly Cornwall And Yorkshire Have A Group Text That We're Not Not Worried About" Day celebrated in my lifetime.

True but the US version is the most hollow since it was the British colonists who gained their independence rather than the indigenous population
Avatar
Yep. Disappointing that they went with this factoid 🤷‍♂️
Avatar
working only the days when a country isn’t declaring independence from britain sounds like a good work calendar
Avatar
Diego Garcia could get a double, Independence from Britain and the US at the same time.

Snort! Probably a celebration twice a month or so, on average
Avatar
Avatar
Celebrated on average every day 7 days somewhere I think.
Avatar
I see this claim a lot, but it can't be more celebrated than starting a new year, can it? Do you have a source for it?
Avatar
I'm actually not positive, since not all cultures celebrate the same year. Lunar cycles are also popular.
Avatar
Not all countries celebrate the same day of independence from Britain either. My hypothesis is that if you add up all the people who celebrate at least one new year, it's greater than the number of people who celebrate at least one Britain-related independence day. But I don't actually know.

This year, the UK can also join the US in celebrating a victory over the Tories on the 4th of July
Avatar
One bunch of Brits who stole the land from the indigenous population kicked another buch of Brits out

Who seems to have disregarded the rather large number of countries that celebrate independence from Britain where that isn't what happened.
Avatar
I was just pointing out the the US wasn’t one of them, as the people I was commenting on were claiming
Avatar
Which people? You commented on the top post in the thread.
Avatar
Britain sucking up to wealthy foreigners buying up their mansions and sports teams is the icing on the cake
Avatar
But America is just British Empire II, so what’s to celebrate?
Avatar
There's lots to be said about the American Empire, but British it is not, and how many independence from the US days are there?
Avatar
Much of Hawaii continues to hope for one.
Avatar
The Philippines celebrates theirs on July 4th too, ironically
Avatar
And Puerto Rico. American Samoa and Virgin Islands seem OK
Avatar
At least three: Cuba, the Philippines, and Micronesia

Avatar
I feel today Britain is in some sense celebrating independence from Britain
