help I am having decision paralysis about buying an e-bike and a compatible trailer for my corgis!!! (advice welcome)
Avatar
sorry I should have specified that I would like specific e-bike and trailer recommendations if you have them!

A friend bought her e-bike from REI because they have a 2 year return policy (iirc). She had some problems with the first bike, returned it to REI months later for full credit (refund?) and bought a whole other make and model. The newer bike, a Cannondale, is working out.

Sorry that's not exactly answering your question but it feels relevant? Good luck!

Having done this in the pre e-bike days, we'd recommend getting a decent brand for the trailer. Bad trailers make the ride feel awful. Burley is probably the gold standard. For the dogs, I'd definitely recommend 2 wheels vs 1 wheel trailer.

For e-bikes, we'd recommend a decent bike brand because it'll ride like a bike instead of riding like a mini-motorcycle. You're a roadie, so you know how important fit is. A bit less so for an ebike, but it should really feel like a well-fitting bike.

Folding was important to spouse and me when we bought, so we went with Bike Friday, but that's not cheap and if you don't NEED folding, it's not worth the premium.

with e-bikes I'm a real non-expert but my sense is that if you go with one of the big brands (trek and specialized, mostly, I guess) you'll be fine with whatever so pick something that looks nice and where you like the price.
Avatar
with pet trailers if you're on a budget your best bet might be used; people tend to flip those pretty often and they don't get used a ton, so you can get something pretty close to new for a lot cheaper
Avatar
there's also not a huge amount that can go wrong with them, as opposed to a bike proper with a whole drivetrain, let alone an ebike
Avatar
I’d also keep an eye out for used Burley wagons. After the kids outgrow them, you can find them at a fairly good discount. I’m holding on to ours to be my grocery hauler once I pick up an e-bike. I had been holding out for the e-bike tax credit that hasn’t come through yet.

oh no I need specific recommendations because there are too many options! lol I will clarify under the post

lol I didn't want to bother her just in case she is annoyed with always getting these questions, but I would in fact very much welcome her advice!!

hahah no worries at all! i'm less familiar with cargo bikes but there's a lot of good youtube review channels out there! biggest thing is figuring out your budget, your needs, then reading/watching reviews to get an idea of how something would work for you
Avatar
thank you! I’m feeling overwhelmed with how many options and reviews there are, so I am going to start fresh tomorrow lol
Avatar
yeah budget really is the #1 thing, with use case and preferences being #2
Avatar
I took a few test drives and it really helped me narrow down my choices, even just with the frame and wheel types.
Avatar
yeah this is huge if you have the option

I don't keep track of specific models but I highly, highly recommend a pedal-assist bike rather than one with a hand throttle. A pedal assist is just like riding a regular bike except you can turn it up and be superhuman. It's super fun

We love our Spicy Curry but it's not really meant to pull a trailer btw :)

Start with a bike shop you like and go from there, I really like Bike Therapy or Keystone

flexible, but I don't want to go much over 1500 if I can help it

general advice Weight does matter for e-bikes (contra buyer tastes). Buy for good brakes also. Not to add to paralysis but know 99spokes.com? Fyi, mine is Aventon Soltera, which they’ve since improved.

I had plans (early stages, so I don’t even have brand recommendations) to get Kirby & I a similar setup before he died way too young, and I am very excited for you & your corgis & will probably do cartwheels when you eventually share pics on here

Recently got an Aventon Abound and would highly recommend. It’s trailer-capable but haven’t used one yet. Massive rack if you’re into that sort of thing, can easily carry the groceries.

I don’t know about specific brands, but I would look at a long-john model, they are way easier to maneuver, especially at higher speeds!

absolutely adore my Benno Boost, which has served me well for 9k miles, but I splurged on it (it has a seat in back for my kid). I also know someone that's been very happy with their Juiced Scrambler, which is much cheaper
Avatar
I don’t have any advice, but that’s going to look awesome as fuck once you’ve purchased it and have a place for the girls to ride along!!

I'm doing the same over a pair of fucking converse I'm the worst
