This is a BFD and reflects both a recognition of deep structural reforms and a tectonic shift in the politics of the Supreme Court. It isn't everything we need but it's a big, big deal. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
This is the problem with "He's the nominee because he won the primary." The information revealed this summer, had it been known earlier, would have completely transformed the primary.
It occurs to me that if an equivalent meltdown to Biden's debate performance had happened a year ago, the pressure to get him to stand aside from re-election would have been MUCH stronger, and the likelihood of him being challenged in the primaries would have been significant.
For better or worse, Biden is probably still at the dead center of the Democratic coalition. Treating the Supreme Court like it's untouchable is over (on the Dem side at least)
I'm going to keep beating this drum: just expand the court to 70 to 100 Justices or so so that NO SINGLE JUSTICE matters that much.
That's it. That's the plan.
If you're looking for something that could recharge the Democratic campaign, being able to run against the Court is a great option on several levels. Let this be the beginning.
Still not quite it, but finally Biden embraces *some* concrete court reform.
According to sources it will include an enforceable ethics code, term limits for justices and a possible constitutional amendment revoking the immunity decision. Court expansion not mentioned.

It's always good to bring up the time I accidentally stumbled on Dave Weigel's old Whedonesque account from his college days, where he described himself as "a Reagan Republican second and a Buffy fan first".
These guys are gonna be in Leavenworth serving life for Crimes Against American Greatness and still on the edge of their seat waiting for the Trump pivot
I was just thinking about how Obama had the PUMAs to contend with heading into his 2008 convention, Clinton had Bernie or Bust in 2016, and now Biden has this sort of cross-cutting rebellion that elected progressives have decided not to join.
Breaking news: President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.
well, Biden just called for term limits and an enforceable ethics code for SCOTUS and a constitutional amendment to end immunity for presidents and other officeholders so I guess its officially the public vs the Business Plot 2.0 at this point
How much coverage have you seen of the fact the stock market is currently at an all-time high? What percentage of Americans are aware of this fact? Why or why not?
actually disagree. term limits is a great choice because (1) it has ridiculous, like 85% approval, popularity, including from indies and republicans and, (2) the questions about its constitutionality can generate good earned media. any story talking about this policymakers is a good one for biden
"Strip jurisdiction down to the minimum for a few years and then put it back" is probably the easiest way to flush out the current occupants of the Supreme Court
The last speaker of the night is Teamsters president Sean O’Brien, who says he's the first Teamster in 120 years to speak at the #RNC. Union voters have been drifting toward Republicans, and now they snagged a union leader for their convention too.
So far this is basically the trans-bashing convention and (1) it's disgusting, and (2) I'm really not sure it's what normal people want to hear from a political party.
Also if any neutral media type really care about "lowering the temperature" they should start note the hate speech in Milwaukee.
One of the everyday Americans speaking now is Linda Fornos, a Latina who says she voted for Biden in 2020 and regrets it. Trying to create a permission structure for other people of color to make the same jump. #RNC
Imagine historians in 200 years -- if humans are still around then -- trying to make sense of the fact that we allow this guy to be the richest person on the planet today and have enormous influence over multiple aspects of our lives:
