"PPD declined, asking that the University provide proof that the encampment — and the rally today, which is entering its fourth hour — presents an imminent danger." if the damn cops - of all people - are going "hold up a minute here" you have well and truly lost the plot
Avatar
This is after the DA and a council member visited the encampment yesterday, and made comments directed at the University like "we don’t have to do stupid like they did at Columbia"...

turns out that electing DAs who aren't completely terrible actually makes a difference, who knew
Avatar
Would have voted to re-elect if he'd been on the ballot
Avatar
They watched all those kids trained in barricade & active shooter strategy from kindergarten and decided they don't want that heat
Avatar
And not just any cops. This is Frank Rizzo's police department. I'm kinda gobsmacked that they'd turn down an engraved invitation to bust some heads.
Avatar
Krasner made it clear that he would not pursue charges against protestors, but would charge cops who busted their heads.
Avatar
I hadn't heard that! Can you point me towards article?

If the Philly DA had to respond to every fistfight, he’d never have a day off.
Avatar
Avatar
Not really. It's just that telling the cops to eat shit has been Krasner's thing from the start.
Avatar
Honestly telling that “liberal” San Francisco fell hook line and sinker for the recall Boudin campaign, but Philadelphia, city of chaos goblins, reelected Kramer handily.
Avatar
Avatar
You're not wrong about that.
Avatar
I can't see the quoted skeet, but this has a very "holy shit, are we the baddies?" vibe

It helps that the DA has already said [paraphrasing] “I’m not prosecuting that shit unless there are actual crimes”

what the fuck is happening since when are the cops afraid to assault and murder teenagers and yeah Im calling it fear the fact that students around the country arent scared and arent backing down has them scared cause aint no way they have moral objections
Avatar
Not moral but even a cop realized that it would be more trouble to crack down on them than to just leave them alone.
Avatar
they LOVE going to the trouble to hurt people Weve seen that plenty enough times Im convinced that its fear these are cowardly gutless bullies whose only ambition in life is to dominate the helpless and when faced with badass KIDS who wont fear them, the bitch-made shows
Avatar
I want to have enough hope to be convinced they are afraid but I just don't.
Avatar
I try to be hopeful myself I try so hard I try to live by "hope for the best, rpepare for the worst" The best I can manage here is to hope Im wrong but Im prepared to be right
Avatar
This kind of trouble is their bread and butter. Low risk to their safety, high reward in OT and budget increases. They get to punch hippies. The good sense restraint being shown here is astonishing to me
Avatar
All the philly schools are surrounded by black and working class neighborhoods, 2020 taught them how quick they can mobilize after a flashpoint and they don't want that again
Avatar
yknow thats fair thats something that I as an european am not fully aware of also I was shown this bsky.app/profile/braa... I dont fully trust but promising if real
Avatar
Oh yeah, Krasner goes so hard the democratic establishment for PA hates him, the current governor spent his time as state attorney general trying to hinder him
Avatar
That was my first thought. Philly cops are used to Philly residents and have far far less motivation to just start shit than cops in most cities
Avatar
Yeah, like gentrification is ongoing but it's a short jog to breach that bubble. I haven't been paying much attention recently but Malcolm x park isn't far and they were doing teach ins/protests etc constantly, move bombing site is close by, it's a particularly bad place to start a police riot
Avatar
Which isn't to say cops on the ground don't want to, but they understand it'd be hard to contain
Avatar
In Philly of all places. A city that literally bombed an entire residential neighborhood in my lifetime
Avatar
"This looks like I could actually get in trouble over it" tends to be the reasoning.
Avatar
I mean yeah I just didnt imagine that would ever apply to police since, as weve seen, they DONT get in trouble
Avatar
Avatar
New York City paid over $35 million for police misconduct during the same events, but that didn't stop the NYPD this time.
Avatar
Once again proving Philadelphia’s superiority over New York.
Avatar
unless the city does something to regein the police in or make them foot the bill, high damages don't mean anything. cities just pull the money from schools, arts, and social programs.
Avatar
sorry, just saw Philly declined Penn State requey
Avatar
University of Pennsylvania-- Penn State is in Bloomsburg, a rural spot halfway across the state.
Avatar
Current Philly Mayor is not a Philly Cop tho
Avatar
Avatar
Having grown up in Philly in the 80s, I had to sit down to take this in
Avatar
Avatar
Penn was really asking the Philly PD to get a MOVE on, huh
Avatar
Avatar
Sweetie, that's dark. Funny, but very very dark. (To the best of my knowledge, Philadelphia is the only city to firebomb its own damn self.)
Avatar
I mean, look, I know how many decades it’s been since MOVE, but, yeah, asking Philly cops to get a group moved from a place they’ve set themselves down in protest still seems like not the greatest decision.
Avatar
Mind you, MOVE was back in the news recently, so it's probably risk management
