it's incredibly tempting! I think young people just cracking into cinephilia (inc. me), for a variety of reasons (not all having to do with cinephilia), find the Total Control version of directing a lot more satisfying than the "grain of sand in the tsunami" version.

"auteur theory" was never intended to explain the role of the director as being the mastermind behind every artistic decision in a given film; the more common use case for auteurism is a director's vision being forceful enough to imprint itself on an otherwise uncooperative form.
