Oh, that's simple. See, as a fellow straight white man like Bender, I know that my view is the objective one, the default, the gold standard. Everyone else's perception is subjective, irrevocably distorted by their experiences, but that's not the case for me, I see reality as it truly is.

One final point. It is notable that Bender describes his upbringing on his page on the Times website as apolitical which, he claims, “made it easier for me to focus on stories engaging readers, not appeasing politicians or any political leaning.” I find this tone of self-congratulation naive./8

As someone not from New York City, I do find it odd that the Mayor routinely describes it as a hellhole that can't even keep its residents alive, much less provide basic services, and reaffirms his commitment to keeping it that way. Seems a suboptimal choice for a Mayor.
