Been playing Immortals of Aveum (2023) for a couple days. I am pleasantly surprised by how gorgeous it looks - as is often the case I'm amazed by the visual design talent working in games today and they make good use of Unreal 5. The gameplay itself I'm still a bit mixed on.

Magical Vacation (2001) is a charming and very colorful JRPG for GBA, with a fan translation available that seems quite good and comprehensive so far. GBA ROMS will play on literally anything, it's got a neat spin on elemental weakness, it's a very chill game.

I saw and had myself a tendency to hope that the debate would be a knockout blow for Trump, that his madness would be disqualifying. This was never anything but wishcasting, and if you were conscious in 2016 you owe it to yourself to be honest that nothing will calm you until votes are counted.

I don't think of myself as being particularly familiar with older people, but I do know and work with a number of folks over 70 so I guess I know what getting old looks like. And I find the way that people talk about Biden's definitely visible aging somewhere from troubling to frankly prejudiced.

Relistening to the Citizen Sleeper OST and I'm just in awe of how good it is, both as music in its own right and as a complement to the game. A great example of how much the music can contribute to the vibe, and Citizen Sleeper really lives on vibes.

lowkey fascinated by the phenomenon of "vibes" playlists/videos on youtube etc. Not surprised that they exist but interested in the vibes people choose to make collections about, and the imagery and effects they choose for them. Some predictable (jazz/cafe/neotokyo), some less so(frutiger aero)

Just to get back to being complimentary let me say that I recently finished Death's Door (2021) and found it to be extremely well made. The art style is simple but effective and the action-platformer design was focused and tightly implemented. Music was lowkey but well matched.

Final Fantasy is such an odd franchise. I mostly love the art and design, the way that everything is so very extra, and in principle I like their commitment to a whole new lore with every installment. It's just the games, as games, that I don't actually enjoy. Shame the movie flopped, really.

The present situation in Sudan is terrible, and there is a real risk of famine on a massive scale: “We’ve seen mortality projections estimating that in excess of 2.5 million people, about 15% of the population in Darfur and Kordofan – the hardest hit regions – could die by the end of September,”

When I think about games as rulesets, as opposed to interactive stories, I think about games that have lasted hundreds or thousands of years. Chess, Go, Mahjong, Poker. We think of video games more ephemerally than that, often, but no reason they have to be - they can last forever!

Seeing the summer game showcases has really convinced me that the "triple-A" action-adventure-shooter games industry are in real trouble and creatively bankrupt. Everything looks like either Fortnite or an Unreal 5 tech demo, and you know how it all plays.

The Final Shape is fantastic, and Prismatic is exactly as fun to play as we all thought. Even if you ignore the narrative, Bungie's artists produce some of the most consistently high quality work around and they have outdone themselves here. Voice work too - wonderful art and design.

NYT has an extensive write up of what is happening in Sudan, which I am providing a gift link for and which I hope you will read. I think the primary reason news stories re: Sudan are rare is that — as the piece notes — it’s hard for journalists to get in. BUT www.nytimes.com/2024/06/05/w...

Forza Horizon 5 is probably my forever car game ; they nailed the "simcade" dynamics so well, and have supported it with many new cars. The spirit of the game is so generous and fun - when I get the itch to drive around in a videogame I'll always have new cars to play with in Forza.

After yesterdays false start with Fallout 76, I tried Dave the Diver instead and wow, what a contrast. Instantly engaging, multiple solid, overlapping gameplay systems and a fun storytelling style. It reaffirms my current obsession with innovative gameplay enabled by simple but effective art.

Yikes - I tried Fallout 76, having heard it was improved from the mess at launch, and perhaps it is but it still seems pretty terrible. I try to only say positive things but this was such a cynical product to begin with, and it's really striking just how ugly it is.
