WSJ has fired Hong Kong-based journalist Selina Cheng after she was elected chair of a local journalism union. She was told advocating for press freedom “would be incompatible with my job.” Cheng’s full statement (posted via twitter):

I don't understand why they see "loud anxiety can unseat an incumbent who won the primary" as a legitimate strategy but see "unify around the candidate we have and spend 4 months loudly and feverently arguing why they're the best choice" as an impossible task steeped in denialism.

A member of Trump’s cabinet and the wife of the Republican leader in the Senate resigned in disgust after the 1/6 coup attempt, and I bet she’d have some interesting comments about the convention/coronation
Will we ever get statements from deVos and Chao about why they resigned after Jan 6?

I cannot emphasize enough that straight reporting in the NYT should be verified elsewhere if you want to be sure about it. The standards are appalling.
I’m going to start with the absolutely jaw-dropping news that The New York Times deceptively edited a quote to make it appear that JD Vance opposes a national abortion ban. — @jessicavalenti.bsky.social

At some point, y'all are going to have to stop pretending to be surprised that most Silicon Valley VCs support Trump. Y'all can't be surprised every time. No it's not a *vibe shift*. They've felt this way since way before Trump. hachyderm.io/@mekkaokerek...

Always curious about theological setups where god allows the holocaust and the Rwandan genocide but steps in to save a convicted felon who wants to lower taxes and deport “the right people”
Not great.

Media and political professionals who’ve been alive since Reagan or before: ah yes this NEW Trump GOP stressing the importance of MAIN st over WALL st and making appeals to the Working Class (citation needed), this sounds NEW to me, somehow

You can now buy solid state batteries. Assuming these end up in cars within a couple years, I think this is the nail-in-the-coffin of internal combustion engines. www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AZR...

If there’s any doubt that solid state batteries are actually here, well … here’s your proof. You can actually buy this for yourself and get it delivered to your door in a day or two. No, solid state batteries aren’t everywhere and definitely not mass market yet, but they also aren’t vaporware and always five years away. Just like this Yoshino battery, there’s other solid state batteries right on the cusp of ending up in consumer electronics devices near you. But do these early versions live up to the hype? And who is this Yoshino battery really good for? Corrections: 00:05 - I've received some comments that this may not be a true solid state battery, but a semi-solid state battery based on testing from a third party company. This is a solid set of questions that are certain to go nowhere in the reality that is the Biden presidency. But good on @brianbeutler.bsky.social for raising them. It's an example of something meaningful that could be done.

I’m sorry we have an imperfect candidate but maybe if the party nominally opposed to Trump actually opposed Trump instead of turning on itself like a pack of hyenas we could surmount a polling deficit of a couple of points
Avatar
Yes the entire plan is: 1. Destroy Biden 2. ??? 3. Defeat Trump
And they STILL won't commit to "we want Kamala Harris!"
Avatar
They sit around all day and work themselves into a foaming rage over perceived Biden slights, convinced that if only Biden would go, all our problems would be magically solved. They attack anyone who thinks this is a crazy way for a party to conduct itself at this moment in time
Avatar
Yes, the Democratic Party is proving itself significantly more broken than the White House - completely unable to break out of the spiral of self-loathing and recrimination, unable to resist the urge to panic when faced with a bad news cycle
The party rn is a bigger problem than the candidate in my view. Speaking with one voice forcefully in all channels with confidence that we can make the country better regardless of candidate, dismissing attacks with contempt, treating press foibles dismissively would have us climbing in the polls.

The "wants to project" unity thing is literally a fake, imaginary narrative that the media invented to try to help Trump. It's not visible anywhere in Trump's own deranged social media posts and certainly not anywhere in his fellow Republicans' RNC speeches.

As someone not from New York City, I do find it odd that the Mayor routinely describes it as a hellhole that can't even keep its residents alive, much less provide basic services, and reaffirms his commitment to keeping it that way. Seems a suboptimal choice for a Mayor.
Mayor Eric Adams, asked by a reporter about the lack of air conditioning at migrant shelters during a heat wave, says, "Every day New Yorkers don't have air conditioners. We make do." He recommends paper fans and says his mom told him to put his head in the refrigerator. —Emma G. Fitzsimmons, NYT

How are the books being cooked?? We had a Democratic primary just like we do every four years and Biden was the overwhelming choice of Democratic voters! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills

I like no one even tries to pretend Biden isn’t mentally there anymore. The case is just “Biden must go because he won’t recognize the intrinsic wisdom of us, the media class, which has never been wrong about anything and believes he’s unelectable”

I'd say "you could probably only get away with this 2 or 3 times before the press would catch on and stop airing you live" but Trump did it for 5 years and they never stopped until Jan 6

Say you're ready to make a MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT and will be joined by VP Harris. Brag about all the bridges your infrastructure law has built for 10 minutes and then say the announcement is you're denying Trump security briefings because he's a convicted felon.
He should convince the media that he’s hiding secret messages about resigning into every speech, but only if you closely examine every word

The tl;dr This is union-busting, written as a statute. A company union is not a union, it is a way for management to dilute/interfere with the power of the union. Company unions have been unlawful since 1935, because everyone recognizes it is an attempt to union bust. This is trying to undo that.
Not a populist: GOP VP candidate J.D. Vance introduced the Team Act (with Marco Rubio) to empower companies to establish and dissolve “employee involvement organizations” (a.k.a., company unions), a long-standing goal of GOP business leaders: www.rubio.senate.gov/wp-content/u...
