Newsletter: Goldman Sachs has called BS on Generative AI, and I believe that it's time that everybody follows suit - generative AI is unreliable, unsustainable, requires an entire rebuild of America's power grid, and is most decidedly not the future. www.wheresyoured.at/pop-culture/
Pop Culturewww.wheresyoured.at A week and a half ago, Goldman Sachs put out a 31-page-report (titled "Gen AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?”) that includes some of the most damning literature on generative AI I've ever seen. ...

The NYT Parkinson's "scoop" is even worse than it seems from the headline, bc buried in paragraph 11 the reporters *know* Dr. Connard met with someone other than Biden, and on March 28, 2024 the President's Public Schedule shows Biden was in NYC the whole day
Breaking News: A Parkinson’s expert visited the White House eight times in eight months from last summer through this spring, according to official visitor logs. The administration has said that President Biden has no signs of the disease.

Relevant from hellsite. Even bluecheck MAGAs know the @nytimes.com is on their side. Congratulations. You are Newsmax.

this is how you, as a newspaper, wind up getting bodied by Michael J. Fox
there is going to be backlash on this story in particular

knowing that the white house just signed a massive parkinson’s bill in july changes the entire tone of this story so much that this makes it wildly, horrifically offensive

It is becoming increasingly clear to me that Biden (and/or his team) is either unwilling or unable to pursue the basic strategy of "make someone point a television camera at you". If they're unwilling I have serious concerns about the campaign. If they're unable all his critics are correct.
Again, the best thing Biden can do to fight the "too old to campaign" narrative is to get out & campaign

"biden gets the last half hour of MJ to kinda just shot the shit on MSNBC" is a media strategy required

it seems to have moved to "Biden is dividing the party by not stepping down" rather than "Biden is unfit to run"

the Claudine Gay "plagiarism scandal" was such a vivid illustration of this, the paper deciding to do constant, full court press coverage of a story that had tenuous actual news value.
In this chat, we suggest a distinction between covering something (NYT does great reporting on Trump's autocratic plans), and *crusading.* The latter is wholly different: It uses saturation coverage to alert readers that they should be alarmed. That's just not happening w/r/t Trump's unfitness.

Keeping this for posterity bc it is nutty that journalists are now absolving themselves of the choice to ignore political violence by adopting the passive voice. "Biden's age" has agency, journalists and their editors do not.

NY Times: You thought this election might be about an unprecedented convicted criminal running to overthrow Constitutional democracy? You think you decide the narrative? Oh no. That’s our turf. And we say the most important thing in the election—nay, the world—is Joe Biden’s age.

“Is suddenly in doubt” “Has boomeranged” I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a purer example of the press depersonalizing its own role than this. Holy Christ.

Reid Epstein doesn't bother to mention Project 2025, which other outlets have been reporting on all weekend and which NYT had once led on. Because Epstein is the one choosing to ignore fascism. Not Biden and not even NYT's competitors.

my pet hypothesis here is that people who vote for trump never want to shut the fuck up about trump and a lot of people who fucking hate trump want to avoid anything that has to do with politics like polling but will still crawl over broken glass to vote
Response rates are so low that the people who answer their phones are asymmetrically unrepresentative weirdos.

the generous interpretation of this recurring phenomenon is that journalism, or at least the editing side, is treated as a self-aggrandizing aristocratic hobby in which it is more important to appear clever and urbane than to inform the public. the less generous interpretation, well,
Honestly, what kind of bananas frame this story like this? Is shit serious or not, fucken freaks?

Similar mistake: treating the Supreme Court as legitimate and the right wing justices as honest arbiters of questions of law.

I think this version is a bit more accurate. Their stated goal is usually just to lose, and they often succeed at doing that.

I genuinely think that the closer analysts get to the actual workings of power, the harder it is for them to step back and actually understand what’s happening very specifically, getting to know politicians on a personal level really fucks with your understanding of what they’re capable of
A lot of folks who supposedly analyze politics for a living are just like…not good at it?

a dead giveaway that project 2025 was written specifically for—and with input from—trump:

A probably related observation is that every civic org, church group, cub scout troop and political campaign relies on a small army of women doing invisible scutwork.

it’s not even what the polls say
"at this point, democrats probably realize that Trump is going to just win in November" is an absolutely disqualifying statement for any pundit. Like how the polls showed a massive red wave in 22? Lethal admixture of doomerism and stupidity.
