When you see the way the press is treating Joe Biden for aging in public, you see how they could treat Donald Trump for committing fraud, rape, espionage, and insurrection and never, ever will.

co-sign but i will add: i don't know the best path but i do know the worst path, and that's replacing him with anyone other than kamala, via any process whatsoever.
I have no idea the best path re Biden but I do know a solid week straight of “Biden Old” and “Rich Dems Worried” above-the-fold stories are *obscene* in the face of SCOTUS using the Constitution to wipe their asses purely in the service of reinstating a felon rapist as president. Crazy-making shit.

It’s maddening to see skepticism of ejecting Biden treated like cultish loyalty. Some of us have been out here saying Biden’s too old for years. The problem is that what is being proposed is a shocking, almost unheard-of remedy, and every historic precedent tells us it’ll end in catastrophe.

My future prospects are fine but I’m pretty worried about America
Its extremely good actually Will, largely because its forcing you to pretend to everyone Biden is fit to lead the nation, which in turn ruins your own credibility and weakens your future political prospects.

I agree but as the amount of time we spend immersed in media grows, and we collectively spend more and more of our time learning about the wider world through screens, you’d expect these hallucinatory postmodern dynamics to intensify. And they have!
But sometimes real world events do shape the narrative. Or are you a thorough going post-modernist? All there is is the text?

Another asinine 'solution' to the Biden Problem, this time from Yascha Mounk. Again, these people think their *entire job* is political strategy and predicting poll numbers. Yet they somehow think that spending months drawing attention to their own party's weaknesses is a good strategy!
Wild to watch horserace journalists suggest the most politically suicidal shit and pretend it's savvy. www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

To Assuage Voters, Joe Biden Must Strap a GoPro to His Chest and Do a 48 Hour Livestream

It's pretty interesting what the media decides is front page news and what they don't decide is front page news! Trump being a child sex abuser with close connections to Jeffrey Epstein somehow doesn't merit the same coverage as "unnamed Dem insider has concerns about Biden's age"
I saw this was trending and had to google it "The post alleges that Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for this year's presidential election, "forced" young girls to "perform lesbian sex acts."
Donald Trump, Katie Johnson allegations: Everything we knowwww.newsweek.com Allegations from a lawsuit that was dismissed in 2016 are circulating on social media.

You gotta love how people rotate between “obviously my reality is structured by narratives” and “how dare you say my reality is structured by narratives” without ever getting to the all-important question “what are the practical consequences of our shared realities being structured by narratives”
"People's lives are structured by narratives" - Thank you Will Stancil, very noteworthy observation. Totally not the most obvious thing in the world 🙄

Honestly still in shock that the most crooked American President in history said "I need immunity" and the GOP Supreme Court said "well, it's nowhere in the constitution, but sure, why not? Whats the worst that could happen?"

just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

Yeah you’re right! It IS bad! It was also nearly as true a year and a half ago. The other side is running a candidate who is a rapist, a convicted felon, and who tried to overthrow the government, which seems even worse! But for some reason we accept that will just get papered over.
I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure running a candidate that the majority of people now see as senile is also extremely bad.

“leftists who have hated Biden for years and opportunistic pundits who have hated Biden for years quickly agreed that the key to beating Trump is to relentlessly attack the duly nominated Democrat until he’s totally unelectable.” with all due respect do people not realize this is extremely bad

lol “an alliance of Nate Silver centrists and leftists” - I can barely imagine a less competent and trustworthy political grouping than this

You’re never going to be able to understand modern politics until you stop ignoring the role that the medium of communication plays. People today spend truly massive amounts of time immersed in various forms of media - mostly online! The narratives and dynamics of this media shapes their world.

Basically the Twitter Class is attempting a party coup

Yeah the Times has been feuding with the sitting president for years and is certainly trying to take him out
I'm not so sanguine that "true, objective reality" will win out. The AG Failson has his frame and he's been busy shoving every little scrap of evidence at hand into it. The big "Biden Lapses" article has text that mostly contradicts its headline. Doesn't matter to the freakout.

It’s probably not good that a whole mob of pundits are wishcasting dramatic West Wing twists that all rely on everyone saying “oh sure just ignore those pesky laws” and it’s getting treated as serious reporting and not shitposting
Avatar
what’s really going to be wild is if we ditch a sitting president for the second time in history based on a fullbore media and social media freakout and then everyone goes back to claiming media narratives don’t matter in politics
Avatar
So typical of our awful political media class to decide that, because THEY believe Newsom or Buttigieg or whoever would be a better candidate than Biden, the actual Democratic primary process conducted by millions of voters should be unceremoniously dumped aside. So contemptuous of actual politics
Avatar
the defense is simply “no president would do that, don’t be goofy” but it requires us to forget that Donald Trump was and could be president
along similar lines, has anyone actually explained *why* the seal team six hypo is ruled out by the majority opinion? all I've seen is right-leaning law profs mocking everyone who raises the issue. but nobody has explained why a president wouldn't be immune for assassinating a rival

Checking on prominent originalists on the other site, I can't find one who has criticized yesterday's anti-textualist immunity opinion. All have tweeted on other topics. Here are the reactions: Mocks dissent: Barnett Silence: Baude, Green, McGinnis, Rappaport, Sachs, Whittington

Here’s the thing: you still have a much larger, better audience on Twitter than here. I know this because I’ve spent a lot of time trying to raise money from liberals and I raise maybe 100% more from Twitter than Bluesky.
Maybe don't post there

Can we start treating this "You have less than six months" refrain from neo-Nazis and far-right extremists as anything other than open death threats? It's out of control

Remember when this guy convinced everyone he was an expert in fascism? Anyway, with Trump newly free to commit crimes and target his political enemies, with total impunity, I'm glad he's focused on the most important thing: dunking on Joe Biden

Not that anyone particularly cares about original meaning, but think folks should still say it out loud: For all of the things that are unclear in the founding documents and unknowabilities of what the Founders intended, "the President can kill anyone or commit a coup" was *never* legally arguable

Merrick Garland has so much to answer for. This decision would not have turned out this way if the prosecution had come in 2021, when Trump’s re-election didn’t seem imminent. They’re deciding this way because they think he’s coming back.
