Show this to everyone who’s like “But THEY don’t belong in my Eurofantasy construct!!1!” African red-slip pottery was excavated from medieval digs in Europe decades ago. Now we have more evidence of even broader trade networks. Our species likes hanging out with new people and trying new things.

I mean even "closed" cooling systems have loss points and leakage, but again , the more data centers you Have, the more power they Use (≈the more water they require to turn to steam to run turbines), the more heat they Produce, the more cooling they Need= the more Water they need. It's use and scale
Because people seem to not understand how "AI" uses so much water, here's a quick+dirty breakdown: The more data centers you have & the more traditional power you use, the more water you 1a) use To cool & 1b) lose, because they arent perfectly sealed systems, & 2) will need to boil to run turbines.

New game: First Large Language Model/Deep Learning/Generative "AI"/"Machine Learning" firm w/ only renewable energy sources, an open source & radical consent model for the collection & use of training data, & an output correction process that's not just "don't talk about prejudicial bias, ever" wins

Remember when some of y'all got real mad at me for doing some back-of-the-napkin math about how much water "AI" likely uses, in light of the fact that they refuse to release their actual numbers? Anyway.

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

When people can't admit they've been bamboozled by the hype-merchant, their scant recourse is often found in the flimflam-y arms of vaporware
Here's my summary of the current Ai bubble from next week's newsletter

As the daughter of a Black Vietnam vet who suffered life long pain from a service related injury but was constantly turned away from care by the VA I can’t even bring myself to read this. My father eventually died of a treatable condition at 62 b/c he was sent home to take ibuprofen by a VA doc.
A 2017 internal Veterans Affairs report shows Black veterans were more often denied benefits for PTSD than their white counterparts. The analysis crunched claims data from fiscal year 2011 through 2016. And disparate treatment started after WWI when it was still called shell shock. It continues.

“Skeleton Key” and “jailbreaking” are bad metaphors for general-purpose AI chatbots that anthropomorphize them into sentient prisoners whose behavior can be neatly observed and controlled. They are large-scale stochastic systems with unpredictable outputs operating with no coherent baseline.
“In a blog post last week, Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich acknowledged the existence of a new jailbreaking technique that causes ‘the system to violate its operators’ policies, make decisions unduly influenced by a user, or execute malicious instructions.’”

That seems like a bad system made of bad and false choices that we should probably all work together to change
You can either keep chasing subscribers or starve and so almost everyone winds up getting funneled down the path to stoogedom

If this resonates with you as an expert in your field, please feel free to hit me up on how to pitch an op-ed to MSNBC dot com
Where are the columnists who are experts in specific fields, breaking down what the Heritage Foundation + Trump want to do to each individual federal agency? E.g. I read the section dedicated to our intelligence agencies, and had to stop, since I was starting to feel a little nauseous.

A little over a week now.
So I turn 42 in a couple of weeks and in case anyone is wondering what to get me, I could really go for a better, more compassionate, and more just human society situated within a better, more compassionate, and more just world. That'd be a real treat.

Crows are such amazing ecological generalists. For several years I've watched various birds in the Seattle area that have learned to pluck fish from the water, sometimes swooping and scooping, other times, hovering almost like a tern. Below, some very jerky video (hand-held 800mm lens). 🪶
