. . . was going to put in a word for this film (an overlooked gem) but then remembered Ms P. (@mariephillips.bsky.social) had already said pretty much everything I wanted to. And w/ considerably more eloquence.

Overjoyed to announce I have an in-depth piece on James Brown’s 70s era and the making of The Payback in the new MOJO wick Nick Cave on the cover. I think I t’s one of the best things I’ve ever written. I also have an interview with the godlike David Yow at the back! Magazines are good.

I’m sorry, but if you don’t say this to your dog/cat you really haven’t read the pet-owner guide properly.

I hate it when something *almost* happens and you get all the bad part but none of the good part. Like burning a cake. Still have to clean the kitchen. Don't get to eat cake.

Kevin Fowley’s A Feu Doux EP was sent to @andrewmale.bsky.social to review. Versions of the traditional French songs that his mum used to sing him as a child. My mum sang them to me too, and his beautiful rendition of Ne Pleure Pas, Jeanette moved me to tears. Out July 26. youtu.be/340vMqZn4mI?...

The linked post on wallpaper movies is something you might not think you need to read, but if you grew up in the 1970s and have bad thoughts of your childhood and the aesthetic that surrounded you, believe me, you need to read it. It's cathartic, one of those I-never-knew-I-needed-this posts.

“These things always happen when I eat veal” is now my favourite movie line. Jean Arthur is torn between Melvyn Douglas and Fred MacMurray - who is given to cutting capers - when she discovers she has one too many husbands. Splendid. Thanks to @andrewmale.bsky.social & @mariephillips.bsky.social

I've spent a lot of time watching Shelley Duvall over the past week, and she was never less than electrifying, and a pleasure to watch, even in the smallest role. This piece went out on @guardianfilm today just hours before we heard the sad news. Hope I did her justice. RIP.

It is not that anyone here would be interested at all, he lied, but the #CocteauTwins have just hours ago revamped and updated their YouTube page to finally include all their official videos over the years, in hi-def at that. So. You know. Not that anyone here would be interested as I said.

🧵 This is how I remember Twitter. A news story being dissected intelligently and wittily with no whataboutery and no-one interrupting. It won’t last but I’ll enjoy it while it does.

People often ask me - "have you got that picture of Cary Grant in uniform with a puppy poking out of the pocket?" Yes, they do. They rush up to me in the streets, it's true. Well, yes. Yes, I do. And here it is.

Letterboxd last four watched. Three downright masterpieces, and one supposedly romantic comedy with the least appealing male lead imaginable
