Some days, that's the job. Seventeen year old lifeguards get fired if they fail to risk their lives by entering the water for a swimmer in distress. I know this because I've fired a lifeguard for exactly that. I have absolutely zero problem holding cops to the same basic, "do your job" standard.

Almost every writer I know, including big names everyone would recognize, has a partner who before ACA provided their health insurance, and their stable income to keep things afloat while waiting on checks and writing like a fiend. The single ones usually are working two jobs, one being writing.

I am not joking or exaggerating in the slightest when I say that constantly immersing yourself in the worst of humanity, no matter how beneficial your motives are, causes lasting psychological damage. Managing it is the biggest challenge in the T&S industry. Don't do it to yourself voluntarily.
