Have y'all considered that the only reason to have a sniper is if you fear someone might start shooting and you can't get to them quickly enough otherwise?

The idea that a police sniper on a roof near a bunch of student protesters might be there to protect the students from someone with a firearm who means to harm the protesters is a much more generous guess than anyone who has seen repeated police violence against protesters is likely to make.

Depends on the scenario. At an absolute minimum, they can spot and report.

First rule of gun safety: don't aim at something you're not willing to destroy. A rifle is not a ethical spotting tool, but you'll notice the follow up pictures have them doing just that.
