Senior Poetry Editor at The Rumpus, author of A Witness in Exile (Louisiana Literature Press, 2011) and Another Poem to Love https://brian-spears.com I also crochet stuff.
One of my favorite things I’ve ever crocheted was this sweater for a friend who became a citizen earlier this year. She wore it to the ceremony and to celebrate later that night. I started making it with my tongue in my cheek, but she legitimately loves it and what it represents to her.

Just want to point out this piece. Because the cop resigned, it’s not in his employment record and so won’t affect his ability to get another law enforcement job.

When I first started trying to crochet about five years ago, I had a book, a Very Impressive Book with illustrations and explanations and I was incredibly frustrated and then I watched a YouTube video and was like, “oh, that’s where the hook goes.” And now I make stuff like this.
Umm, Willa Cathair? I’m gonna need that sleeve if I’m gonna finish my sweater today.

Opinions aren’t like assholes. Opinions are like tardigrades, able to live in extreme conditions and be revived even when they’ve been presumed dead for a long time.
That said, tardigrade faces do resemble sphincters, so maybe there’s some overlap.
I can’t decide if it’s worse that the police were dishonestly using this as an argument against protesting students or if they just didn’t think of the fact that these kids have had to do active shooter training their entire lives.
