I see that the Foo Fighters just kicked off their UK tour, so it's time to drag out my "Why I Hate Dave Grohl" thread.
TL;DR: The Foo Fighters funded AIDS denialist groups from 1999-2007 that lobbied to deny people life-saving medication. They have never acknowledged the deaths they caused.
I don't think I've ever talked on Bluesky about why I hate the Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl.
Don't read any further unless you're prepared for uncomfortable truths about the "Nicest Guy in Rock", and his very substantial body count & subsequent cover-up.
Wow thanks for sharing, I never knew about any of that. Sad how far back science denial goes and how much influence conspiracy theorists can have over the public.
it's wild how much this is basically not on the internet at all, apart from some reddit threads where the mods of various foo fighter subreddits explain that people are not allowed to ask about it and will be banned for trying
I never knew any of this but now feel vindicated in my relentlessly taste-based disgust for this outlandishly mid band that emerged from the ashes of a way better band
It's in the thread. "Alive and Well With AIDS Alternatives", founded by Christine Maggiore, was their official charity. They held charity events (where other denialist groups received donations), and had a clickable link on their webpage where you could buy her book or give her money.
They may not want to talk about their past mistakes from 20 years ago, but since then they've supported organizations such as Elton John's AIDS Foundation and LIFEbeat.
My guess is they live in fear of their legal culpability & that supporting AIDS charities is an intentional stratagem for any future lawsuits. I suspect this is also why they'll never do a mea culpa since it would open them to people seeking restitution for the harm they did.
IANAL, but I have trouble believing they'd have any legal liability (as opposed to taking a bad reputational hit). There's no sign of the mens rea; they can argue they were as deceived as anyone who listened to them. I could be wrong, though.
As I mentioned elsewhere, the very first step in making good would be an acknowledgment and an apology. He's done neither. Contributing to good causes does not excuse hundreds of thousands of deaths, and it's wild to me that this needs explaining.
One of the band mates was friends with the org leader, iirc. They've since cut ties and have done a lot of work to spread AIDS awareness, as well as fight for LGBT rights in other ways.
They also went on to campaign for various LGBT charities as well as AIDS and cancer research. Almost as if they realized they were duped, and instead of making a scene about it, had an about face and worked to undo the damage they could 🤔
Aw. So sad.
Peter Frampton is well liked, no? I'm not a big fan (though I do like his music) so I could've missed something, but I thought he was considered a genuinely nice guy too.
Never heard much about him personally, one way or the other. From what I’ve heard, Alice Cooper is a really nice guy in person too. Just be ready to talk golf. A lot.
Well, he's pleasant and well-mannered, but he's a Republican. And, I mean, he's still a Republican *now*. So I don't know that I could say Alice is a nice guy. 😅
