"Trump burned a cross in his yard while wearing a pointed hood, though there is no evidence he was referencing the KKK." Kinda the same thing really.

“Trump could simply be a devotee of Prussian constitutionalism circa 1890 who aims to revoke special privileges for the former Kingdom of Bavaria”

"As he did not specify, he could have been referencing the first or second Reich"
Avatar
no you see the Trump team is just really interested in the history of the Holy Roman Empire

"reich," a term that is famously free of context when used in English
Avatar
(reaching deep into their ass) For all we all know, Mr. Trump might be a big fan of minimal music.
Avatar
Real "ack-shually, that's the wehrmacht, NOT the SS, ahem." energy.

It’s the other Reich, you don’t know her

…she lives in canada.

If 90+% of US audiences associate "Reich" (BTW, my autocorrect capitalizes "Reich" for me) with the Nazi use "Third Reich", what is the second most common understanding of "reich" to US audiences?
Avatar
Bending backwards so hard they broke their back 🤦🏽‍♀️

Similarly, the swastika is a sign of "good fortune" in many eurasian and indigenous american cultures, dating back for millenia, so the same level of caution should be applied to its use within a political context. (Or, you know... maybe not. But the same either way.)

"He's quoted Hitler in the past which is also complete coincidence it lines up here"
Avatar
Seriously though, how many other well-known movements in history have ever called themselves "reich"?
Avatar
In English Language context? Not Many ☠️ In German the word 'Reich' means realm. So France is FrankREICH in German, and the United Kingdom is the "Vereinigtes KönigREICH" Without any prepostitions the term 'Reich' is usually understood to mean Germany before 1945.
Avatar
We have some lunatics who doubt the Federal Republic is a real (independent and sovereign) state. Those people are called 'Reichsbürger', citizens of the Reich.
Avatar
More properly "Citizens of the Empire" because in doubting the federal republic to be a real state, they also think the German Empire was never formally dissolved. Hence also why the Reichsbürger at minimum intermingle with monarchists & heirs to German aristocracy, hence Heinrich the 13th of Reuss.
Avatar
Like the other reply said, but in addition: "Reich" also means "empire" next to "realm", like the Mughal Empire being the Mogulreich or the Chinese Empire being the Chinesisches Reich. So depending on the language either 1 movement, or an entire era of human history. cue Imperialism & every empire

Other hand, the ad was in American English.

like the other reply said

Oh there is no "suggestion" that the words they use are in fact the words they use? Okay I "suggest" that he was referencing Nazi Germany. They can delete their "no suggestion" story now.
Avatar
Personally I don't find the (unlikely) scenario where one accidentally endorses Nazi Germany particularly comforting
Avatar
I think the whole reason they put the word "reich" in there was to get the media to do stuff like this. Not saying that it shouldn't be addressed and responded to, just that they've discovered the press does a really bad job of that and they enjoy watching them flounder.
Avatar
Just randomly using German words popularly associated with only one thing seems like more than a suggestion
Avatar
wow you guys are really displaying your ignorance of the long and complex history of the word “untermenschen”
Avatar
Trump today used several terms closely associated with Hitler. However, some say Trump, a student of philosophy, is simply following his long tradition of drawing on Nietzsche in an effort to lay out his vision of a culturally homogenous militarized state, which supporters say sounds quite nice-

Can't even trust Newsweek. What a world.

They were bought out by a money-hungry Harvard asshole a few years ago.

They haven't been remotely reputable since the mid-90s if ever, so I'm not shedding many tears.

The dude encouraged his cult to invade the capitol to overturn the election, aren't we past the dog whistling?

He still dreams of organon?

mfw i can't write the truth bc i have to ensure that the mythical fair and balanced reporting is occurring
Avatar
Lol yeah. The context makes it obvious, otherwise we would have a the bart, the. Situation bc reich with a smol r means rich. Which is something Trump hopefully will not be but I'm not holding my breath anymore else I'll keel over
Avatar
Bah. Not worth a dollar.

Sorta like “Bigly” has no connection to that orange orangutan

While I have been told that Newsweek has run downhill, this is just the usual, "We're definitely not defaming anybody, but here is a relevant explanation helpfully showing why this was a very bad thing" cautious media wording.
Avatar
Look, man, there were three reichs. He could’ve been a referring to one of the other two.
Avatar
Best part is they seemed to volunteer this themselves. So much for the fourth estate.

Like he doesn't have a full set of the Hitler silverware from that episode of Band of Brothers.
