Have to respect the Diamondbacks for choosing to pay tribute to consummate craftsman Jon Avnet, director of 1991's Fried Green Tomatoes and 2008's Righteous Kill, with a patch on their jersey. A lot of teams wouldn't have.
One of the more memorable cab rides of my life involved the driver, a voluble Romanian woman, enthusiastically waving a rented DVD copy of Righteous Kill around. It's possible she now works in the D'Backs marketing department.
Coppola had DeNiro and Pacino in a film. He made Godfather 2.
Michael Mann had DeNiro and Pacino, and he made Heat.
Jon Avnet had DeNiro and Pacino, and he made a movie with 18% on Rotten Tomatoes.
From Fried Green Tomatoes to Righteous Kill is literally running the gamut from A to F (Cinemascore). Definitely an Arizonaesque career worth celebrating.
I cannot wait to run into someone from Avnet in the near future and try to convince them that's where the name came from.
Bravo, Roth. Thank you for the mischief.
Jon Avnet is indeed the grandson of the company founder. I know this because I had to write about Avnet for work and looked at their Wikipedia page and ended up on Fried Green Tomatoes in three links
