rewatched dr strangelove and cannot stop thinking about the comment “he’s just doing tim robinson” about george c scott
Avatar
apparently random people have been noticing the resemblance for years but as far as I can tell no one has ever asked tim robinson about it or whether he’s taken any inspiration from scott’s performance or even just “what hell it’s weird right lol”

im gonna lay my claim here and now: it's convergent evolution. both these boys were raised in Detroit by parents that worked for car companies. same brand of white boy, same style of goof.
Avatar
this is both plausible and an extremely wild outcome given the uncanny similarity
Avatar
It’s not a typical Scott performance, and the story goes that Kubrick basically tricked Scott into being goofy and over the top by telling him he wouldn’t use these nutty takes — and then he did. I don’t know how true that is, but it suggests GCS⬆️25% = TR

I might be able to get him this question!

Well my friend that skates with him either ignored my text or rolled his eyes and left me on read sorry guys I tried

If anything Tim's leaning into it more as he ages. Season 3 featured a lot of this head scrunch into his neck move which we didn't see in earlier seasons

Has he ever been asked if he took any inspiration from Scott? The tripping scene seems like something that would absolutely be in ITYSL
Avatar
the scene where he kind of blubbers his jowls while talking about fighter planes seems extremely ITYSL

Robinson has claimed Hitchcock as more of an influence bsky.app/profile/peri... but now I see what you're getting at and I can't shake it. Really this just means George C Scott should've played more comedy.
Learning that Tim Robinson's favorite film is STRANGERS ON A TRAIN snaps everything into place, because STRANGERS ON A TRAIN is such an I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE scenario played straight.
Avatar
omg I rewatched it this last month and had the exact same reaction “this… every scene in this is an ITYSL skit”
Avatar
last time i watched it all i could think of was seeing Tim in a remake lol
Avatar
before I got to your text I saw the pic and only saw HOLY SHIT HE LOOKS LIKE TIM ROBINSON.

George C. Scott underrated as a comic actor in my opinion, but that's probably only because he was so highly rated as a dramatic actor.
Avatar
Apparently Scott was really angry with Kubrick after he saw the final cut of the film because Kubrick used all his most over-the-top, buffoonish takes.
Avatar
Shouldn't have done such a good job, then -- but that's the curse of being George C. Scott.
Avatar
My understanding is that Kubrick actively tricked him by promising that the over-the-top takes were just "practice" and would not be used. Personally, I like to think that Scott didn't even know the camera was running and that it was all just a private joke between friends.
Avatar
This is the first time I’ve had even an ounce of interest in watching that movie. I can’t tell what that means for me but it’s something.
Avatar
it is one of those rare films that has been memed to death but is actually still worth watching

I watch it every time I need to be cheered up by the thought that the world could end quickly and without warning.
Avatar
I made the mistake of watching it on an overseas flight without knowing anything about it other than it was a 'classic'. Black and white, seemed pretty serious. I embarrassed every single person I was traveling with because I could not, for the life of me, suppress my laughter. It's a masterpiece.
Avatar
It is absolutely brilliant in so many ways.
Avatar
It's genuinely great. Like Catch-22, it seems like it gets more relatable every year
Avatar
The tragedy of Tim Robinson's time on SNL is that you have this mad genius stuck with an executive producer who thinks he invented comedy.
