They conflate freedom with choice....and it tracks because choice comes from means.
People with means thus have no freedom and they like it that way.

It’s hard to manipulate an educated electorate. The obvious answer is to deeducate people and the public institutions that serve them, while providing alternatives with the propaganda you want your electorate to swallow.
And make them feel even more isolated and a mix of angry, bitter and sad about their very conscious intellectual inferiority (possibly out of fear of shame, being bullied about their smarts before, or just a pointless attachment to ego for ego's sake).
