WELCOME TO BLUESKY! I recommend exploring our custom feeds, which are a little like hashtags but more interesting. We have them for academic and professional subjects, sports, cities, hobbies (e.g., gardening, baking), and many more. Search them in the sidebar under Feeds or at goodfeeds.co
LOOKING FOR OLD TWITTER FRIENDS? There are a few tools for that. Try www.skygaze.io (which doesn't seem to be working for me at the moment but may be again soon) or the Chrome browser add-on Sky Follower Bridge:
HOW DOES YOUR TIMELINE ("SKYLINE") FEEL? Want to see more chatter—or less? Want to adjust what sorts of photos and posts are shown vs. hidden? Explore your settings under both Moderation and Settings > Home Feed Preferences in the sidebar.
LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO FOLLOW? Find a few favorite users and then try following some of the people *they* follow. Or experiment with our custom feeds (under Feeds in sidebar) to find users with shared interests. Don't hesitate to follow lots of people to make your feed lively—you can always unfollow!
WANT PEOPLE TO FOLLOW YOU BACK? Make sure to add a profile pic and some info about yourself in your bio. Posting once or twice helps too—you're much likelier to get followers if people can learn enough about you to see if you have things in common.
HOW TO HAVE FUN ON BLUESKY: Like and repost! Feel free to reply to people (in a friendly, non-creepy way). Ask questions if you have them. It's a good-natured bunch. See someone who rubs you the wrong way? Feel free to mute or block! The Bluesky philosophy is block, don't engage trolls.
This is an excellent way to present this - more useful and more up to date than the old ones that assumed that people would usually feel that their timeline was slow and empty.
Hi again Joshua, I'm noticing people have pinned this post of yours. They have a 📌 in their reply.
I would like to pin it also, but I'm not sure how..? Thank you very much
Ahh, this is a little funny if you’re not used to using feeds, because it’s essentially a workaround. Bluesky doesn’t have a normal bookmarking feature yet. But informally, if you reply to a post with that pin emoji, it’ll show up in this feed (which only shows the pins of whoever’s looking at it)
You don't need to "like" it, as far as I know! (The way to do it is from the feed's About page; I just don't think it accomplishes anything. Liking a feed is mostly a sign to other people that it's a worthwhile feed—giving it a positive review.)
📌 (Sorry, had to try this. But even if it works, how annoying it must be for the person getting all these replies on a pin-worthy post. I usually just screenshot on my phone or save to Pinboard in my browser.)
Ok I will try that next time.
I don't know what Pinboard is but I will look it up.
Sorry @joshuajfriedman.com if it's been a bit much. I guess we are all learning on the fly.
Hey @jaz.bsky.social - just an idle thought, this reminds me a bit of the "remindme" bot on Reddit where the # of replies can get overwhelming
Would it be possible to not just be "posters who pin'd in reply to post" but also "posters who liked a pin in reply to post"?
Basically "likes are me too"?
