“I don’t know about you, but my community does not have the option to lose. My community does not have the luxury of accepting loss in July of an election year. My people are the first ones deported. They’re the first ones put in Rikers. They’re the first ones whose families are killed by war.”

🧵 Pete Buttigieg is very rare among Democrats in that he isn't afraid of exposing the corrupt motives of right-wing elites. Having formerly worked w/them, I learned that it's always about money or religious insanity, no matter whatever supposed rationales they give. www.salon.com/2024/07/20/i...
"It's not that complicated": Pete Buttigieg on why a gay billionaire is backing JD Vancewww.salon.com When asked to weigh in on Peter Thiel's reasons for supporting Vance, Buttigieg broke it down plainly . . . money.

The 2 years I spent at Stanford before dropping out overlapped with Thiel's time there, and I was very familiar with the circumstances that radicalized him. The piece I mention below was part of the broader culture wars that surrounded the canon wars, which often took on decidedly racist overtones.
Of course, homegrown US white supremacy does just fine on its own. But until recently it has been socially unpalatable in the US, if less so in the milieus Musk, Sacks and Thiel have frequented. (My first published piece was an op-ed in the Stanford Daily rebutting a call to end affirmative action.)

I had not known that David Sacks is also South African or that Peter Thiel spent time there and in Namibia during as a kid. It makes me think of transnational transmission of historical memory, similar to ex-Nazis who ended up in South America and served as ideological guides to the dictatorships.

Never listen to the words of a multi-millionaire (Zaslav's net worth is $400 million) that would destroy a fully completed AMAZING LOOKING movie just to get a tax right off. If ever there was a symbol of greed and ignorance David Zaslov is it.

Not that it's really the point but good to remember that Zaslav is obsessed with M&A because he's incompetent and incapable of running the business created by his last merger and needs to fail upwards into an additional merger to salvage his mistake.
Real hard to parse out which ones are the principled stands against Biden’s age and which ones are the cynical stands against his administration’s efforts to fight anticompetitive business practices. www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/bus...

Some students don't understand how we (their professors) can tell. I've found success by showing them images like these and saying, "See how it's obvious these images are ai-generated? That's how obvious it is with ai-generated writing most of the time."

I have to assume reporters are rushing to the area to get the layup article about how Vance’s hometown hates him
He made a career out of trashing the people he grew up around (home town and his grandparents town). I just don’t get how anyone thinks this will work out well for him on the national stage.

According to the article, this has been in the works since April. I think the tipping point was when it became abundantly clear that SCOTUS was going to work to delay Trump's trials past the election (and, it turns out, grant the president insane immunity).
