Guess what the latest pseudoscience "wellness" trend is that's right it's anti-sunblock brigades yep it has "chemicals" or some shit so better not rub that on yourself good luck with your skin cancer at least you didn't touch a chemical!

I like pointing out to people that they too are made of cheeeeemmmiiiicaaaaaals. *scary wiggly fingers*

Wow, it's almost as if over a century of indiscriminate corporate propaganda has had negative consequences. It's too bad nobody could have predicted that...

Followed shortly by the sequel, "Short Names Like 'Borax' Are Good And Long Names Like 'Sodium Tetraborate Decahydrate' Are Bad."

“If *I* can’t pronounce an ingredient, it must be trying to kill me.”

A friend of mine on Facebook is a painter and recently got into a knock-down drag-out with someone who thinks no precautions need be taken around “natural” pigments. You know, like lead chromate red. Or cobalt.

The Radium Girls would like a word.

yeah, all those big long ingredient names in sunscreen sound awful, I'm sure these all-natural leaves are much better for your skin

I just found out: water is made of chemicals!
Avatar
I don't have to take this sass from someone made entirely of filthy *chemicals*!
Avatar
oh our dear lrd in heaven this is every single group chat i left
Avatar
I'm sure the resulting skin cancer will be blamed on the sunscreen they applied before all the sense left their heads
Avatar
LOL absolutely it will
Avatar
Perfect metaphor for vaccines in that way.
Avatar
Or they’ll blame it on sunscreen “shed” from the uninformed losers who insist on still wearing it.

My sister’s SIL has “spikeopathy” and I just read this long explanation of what it was, along with demands the SIL is making of her extended family members for an upcoming reunion to maintain a 10-foot distance from her at all times and I’m feeling a little triggered, ngl.

Their commitment to preserving the most preventable illnesses and ailments is really astounding.

I believe it's hubris. "I'm better than anyone else so I don't need to do XYZ."

Toothpaste has chemicals in it, but tooth decay is natural. The naturalistic fallacy gets us to bad breath & mouth pain pretty quickly, I guess sunburns, wrinkles & skin cancers are also on that route.
Avatar
Literally everything has chemicals in it.
Avatar
I had a niece who started selling oils through and MLM talk about living a chemical free life and I was like, I don’t think those words mean what you think they mean.

Warn her to check her tax forms carefully, relative ended up with a huge IRS debt and I have suspected they were defrauded somehow.
Avatar
She has jumped from MLM to MLM for the last 20 years and it makes me sick because they are so predatory to their sellers. I don't know why she hasn't figured it out yet.

water is full of h2o, so... honestly at this point if we can get them to lay off the raw milk (full of bird flu rn) & possibly spare us a flu epidemic this year, that'd be a big win

Avatar
air is chemicals it's also fun to tell the chemicals folks that smoke detectors have radioactive elements in them. self-solving problem
Avatar
Oh, wait until I tell you about the people who are anti-toothpaste…
Avatar
Whenever people harp on about 'basic biology' I can only think of the suffering that would cause.
Avatar
“It’s not natural!” “I notice you’re wearing glasses?”
Avatar
Oh my conspiracy theory coworker fully believes that sunscreen causes cancer.
Avatar
Avatar
Oh he got ripped a new one in short order. Skin cancer runs heavily in my family and I will not tolerate that nonsense. He also believes in marking your territory with urine, hoarding silver, and only eating food from cans.

For bonus points, we are the only two queer people (out ones at least) at our workplace which has lead to a bunch of "please don't think this bonkers position is held by the community" talk from me.

"unpronounceable chemicals" My brother in Christ, have you ever cracked open a biochem text and read aloud the formal names of these natural compounds you fetishize?
Avatar
I mean we prefer TiO2 creams but using something else vs skin cancer is a pretty damn easy choice
Avatar
Trust me these folks aren't using mineral sunscreens either.
Avatar
Of course not. That'd be like getting tricked into thinking vaccines cause autism but then believing a non-thimerosol vaccine was safe -- a nuance beyond the audience

Oh are these the same as the “if you cut out seed oil you won’t need sunscreen” brigade?
