More anti-democratic thoughts from 2018 the NYT allowed this writer to exclude from his current piece. Delivered with an air of detached irony, as if he miiight be joking or exaggerating. But is he?
The NYT also allowed him to exclude his partisan inclinations. From the 2018 piece: "In a bland way I hope to see Republicans control various state and national offices. This arises from a single issue: the legality of abortion."
If someone's telling me not to vote, I'd like to know their take on actual policies that are at stake in the election. The NYT, apparently, does not think that's relevant.
Imagine for one second if the NYT marshaled its massive influence towards voter registration, towards supporting voting rights groups, towards encouraging people to vote and fighting people who try to stop people from voting.
Imagine if the NYT actually championed participatory democracy.
Two copy edits, because I'm a writer:
In the first post, just "July 4th" instead of "the July 4th"
In the second post, "which are" instead of "which is"
Folks have noted that including links rewards the NYT with traffic for running this article. They're right! So I'm going to delete the first post in this thread - here it is as a screenshot for context.
Look at this link at the bottom of the New York Times' "Don't vote" opinion piece.
They didn't run this as a one-off. They're trying to turn non-voting into a thing.
Repugnant.
This is not surprising, the other day they posted a garbage piece about the legal weed rollout in New York supplied to them by the Manhattan Institute.
If it makes you feel any better, after clicking the link in your post and reading that article, I finally threw in the towel and canceled my subscription. (And sent them a little rant about it in the "why are you canceling?" field, although I have no idea who if anyone reads those things.)
The more people vote the less Republicans get elected.
They are rather "discreet" about Epstein court papers. Raising questions about the only two accusations. The papers are mentioning the testimony of a 14 year old. Prince Andrew and Trump were regulars at Epstein's place.
a.g. sulzberger's basically one of those pale wriggling things that live on the underside of logs, but instead of dismantling rotten wood he just rots society
One of the things that gets me about all this Trump ass kissing; the same thing happened in NAZI Germany before Hitler came to power. Hitler still had all those newspaper/radio reporters killed and replaced them. Trump is following the same plan.
The New York Times has been the worst newspaper in North America for my entire lifetime of 56 years. This should surprise no one. Things only have the power you give them. Stop treating the New York Times like it’s important.
I couldn’t make it through the NYT article. It was banal and approaching unreadable. He makes such a weak argument, trying to hide it in $20 words to make it look intellectual. What a joker.
I am highly suspicious of people who tell others not to vote. If a person doesn’t want to vote, that’s their personal choice but to encourage others to opt out is shady as hell.
Sorry, imagining the NYT championing participatory democracy is just too difficult. Easier to imagine that Santa Claus is real or this actually is Discworld.
