don’t forget Campbells cream of mushroom
Dear god I’ve just seen a recipe from the Midwest called funeral potatoes. Why are so many American recipes based around a can of Campbells condensed cream of chicken soup?

If you paid attention to Trump's side of the debate, he had the same underlying problem Biden did, where over and over he would start a sentence and realize he couldn't say or remember the words that would come next, but where Biden stalled out, Trump just switched to blurting something unrelated
Donald Trump has good days and bad days but increasingly only bad days. He's lost it - he can't focus and his brains are leaking out his ears, but the press is very impressed with him because HE CAN STILL SHOUT

Lots of Americans about to discover other nation’s immigration laws.
Americans, looking to move abroad: “so where can I live that isn’t fascist, won’t wilt under climate change, and has a Whole Foods?”

The single wrongest early virologist prediction about COVID: that there were only a limited number of possible variations, so not to worry medium-term. FLiRT was dominating COVID-19 cases, now we're already onto FLuQE

I love the "no resources" claim by Rufo. It's as if his ideas just succeeded in the open marketplace...rather than being identified by Tucker's white nationalist show runners as a useful post-George Floyd talking point, and then immediately sucked into the Christian Nationalist world of Russ Vought.

The discourse around biden needing more sleep is fully insane. Does no one remember "Executive Time," the thing Trump spent the majority(!) of his schedule on where he would just watch TV and tweet? Dude was categorically unable to fulfill any of the demands of the office and the press barely cared

I wish someone kept a list of all the imbeciles who said Elon Musk is a free speech hero so I could waggle a middle finger in their insipid faces until it fell off

I'm a weird anarchist in that i view nationalism and the nation-state as larger existential threats than either capitalism or liberalism, and most certainly do not see the three as equivalent or part of an ideological totality.

I agree actually — my study of Jewish history has suggested to me that group xenophobia is waaaaaaay older and more dangerous than capitalism or liberalism

Also: The thing where the parties swap candidates around to safe seats is an artifact of the parties having too little say in the UK FPTP system. They shouldn't have to do shit like that just to keep a roster of reasonably reliable people in parliament. Or reliably reasonable. Whatever.

It's long annoyed me reading comparative politics research that what I call 'checks & balances' they standardly refer to as 'separation of powers.' It felt pedantic to insist, but Bouie here highlights why pedantry on this point is essential: SoP invites fatal misunderstandings that C&B avoids.
roberts essentially ignores the purpose of separation of powers, which was not to create entirely separate spheres of action but to prevent the emergence of unchecked authority. instead, he says, separation of powers *demands* unchecked authority.

Yes I agree. Since we can no longer hope for an orderly transition we need to be building multifaceted resilience that can meet a range of challenges. For me it's community and organising. Denser social ties will always be useful in all circumstances.

Back when the forecasting should have been taken more seriously most people didn't listen very much to those of us calling for it. I thought maybe one day the "decision makers" would catch up. And in way they have. But circumstances have moved on, so they're still behind.

But we are deep in the age of climate shocks now. The age of people on the move. The age of "I have never seen a hurricane, fire, rainstorm do that before". The age of consolidation of media & governance in hands that are not steering for long-term collective & ecological health
