There needs to be a book on the early days of cable because it kinda felt like we were in Ernie Kovacs territory. Nobody knew anything, so a few weirdos immediately got platforms. (Same thing happened to the internet, too.)

In the early days of The Comedy Channel (before it merged with "Ha!" and became Comedy Central) a talk show that brought on Dr. Ruth for the explicit purpose of having her not answer questions. They would donate money to charity every time a sex question was asked and she had to say silent.
