New: multiple sources, including executives, explain why sites like Jezebel are being shut down despite being very popular. The "brand safety" industry has created a paranoid environment where companies are not prepared to run ads next to important issues. www.404media.co/advertisers-...
Advertisers Don’t Want Sites Like Jezebel to Existwww.404media.co The 'Brand Safety' and 'Suitability' industries have financially crushed the news business by keeping ads away from articles that its 'sentiment analysis' algorithms think will make people sad or upse...

Google’s algorithm seems to think I desperately want really ugly shoes for some reason, or weird stuff I don’t even recognize

Yup. My spouse just saw one for a grain bin directory.

I doubt Romanian Rambo is paying much to be in my timeline

The last time I was there, the only ads I saw were for the weirdest looking bras I've ever seen in my life. That's it. Just bras.
Avatar
current state of the ads over there looks like alt.usenet.kooks though
Avatar
I block every one of them when they show up. Not one major or recognizable brand in the bunch. And a lot of weird-ass "promoted" conspiracy shit.
Avatar
I think it’s 1) still a lot of eyeballs and 2) the belief that since Twitter is (was) such a diffuse place they can avoid direct association with the undesirable elements running around there (they can’t).
Avatar
I mean
I don’t go on twitter much, but the ads have been weird enough for me to take screenshots

The Pratt & Whitney one is funny, I see those ads at the Pentagon metro station and neighboring stations, absolutely no way it's worth buying space for that on Twitter, you going to stumble on the one guy in the Finnish defense ministry who can make that call?
Avatar
I got these gems the other day
Avatar
sorry how many Belaruses are there?!
Avatar
Weird they reference the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, which hasn't existed in ... 30+ years now?

Mainly this is why they’re dying in ad terms BUT scale is a counter pressure to brand safety. Sufficient scale makes some advertisers feel they need to be there.

Which makes me wonder if he’s manipulating usage stats one way or another

Someone has to market white hoods and robes …

Or barstool sports Didn't Jezebel's EIC recently quit because the owners suck or something?

cheech don’t give a fuck darth
Avatar
Last few times I went on there most of the ads were sketchy dropshipping garbage, AI/crypto scammers, or weird and very specific threatening sponsored subtweets in the vein of “I know what you did, coxwanker666”
Avatar
Same. I block every single one. It has given me great satisfaction to see only loser ads now

Football, gambling and gaming! They really don’t know me! 😂

I'm having flashbacks to the struggles across the 70s-90s that Ms. Magazine had with advertisers who thought "womens'" magazine would mean makeup tips and fashion spreads.
Avatar
Yeah, this has been an issue with media aimed at women since forever. Advertisers have traditionally had outrageous amounts of power over the content of women's magazines.
Avatar
Perhaps encouraged by the magazines that let dimestore makeup companies pay to be credited on the contents page with having furnished the cosmetics for the high priced models on the cover who wouldn't touch that cheap stuff. Payola can be habit-forming.
Avatar
Advertising companies need to be torn apart the way my dog is ripping up a sock right now.

After one interview with an adtech co. in the aughts, that space was a hard pass for me. It wasn't just the person; the whole business model smelled bad, money notwithstanding.
Avatar
But then you still have to wrangle with brands afraid of boycotts
Avatar
Meanwhile, they'll run Taboola and Outbrain garbage under everything?
Avatar
with the Ohio vote on Tuesday and the stated priorities of voters these days, it's hard not to read an element of voter suppression into this story
Avatar
That's still only a reason the site would shut down *if you need profit-margins to please shareholders rather than an owner-operator*. People who start businesses need to learn--if you sell to someone outside of your industry these days, they're going to kill your business within a few years.
Avatar
It's a catch 22 because there's often no other way to get the funding to grow.

Brand safety except on Facebook and Twitter of course. Feminists? Of course not! Nazis? Absolutely yes.

And yet twitter still exists...

The Twitter toilet tank is running out of water, fast. Too much crap to flush. Likely involvent, worth 10-20% of what Musk paid?

Possibly a bad time for this and fascism to be happening together I'm sure it's not related!

This is part if what the right has tried to do by going after corporations just for expanding their brands or exercising (real) free speech. Beer, potato head, Disney. It’s to get them to “behave” & be afraid. Self censor.
Avatar
On the other hand it’s disturbing to see some ads in certain contexts. Especially sex related ads next to a story about rape or sexual harassment or stories appropriate for kids.
Avatar
Yeah but twitter is fine…lol what a joke
Will there be any replacement for Jezebel? Have the editors & journalists announced they will be doing anything specific?
Avatar
Internet media is in a no-win situation where stoking outrage and divisiveness is how they got eyes on ads, but now advertisers are sick of dealing with the backlash that has been starting to create for them as people realize the way to hurt platforms is to hurt their advertisers.
Avatar
How does this square with the fact that everything is clickbait or ragebait in a quest for the most eyeballs?
Avatar
As everything becomes politics, politics becomes risky for the money. The irony.
