"In January, as we covered an active criminal investigation into the alleged chemical spraying of pro-Palestinian protesters, University officials demanded we hand over Spectator’s photos and videos and intimidated journalists by telling us the NYPD was going to subpoena our organization."
Letter from the Editors: Columbia enabled the NYPD to suppress free press as it brutalized our peerswww.columbiaspectator.com Editor’s note: This article deals with topics of police brutality.

Feels like if you want to suppress a school paper you should probably start with a school that doesn’t have a massive journalism heritage.

Just seems harder to get away with. Boil that frog.

As police can tell you, the easiest way to keep a frog from jumping out is to kettle it.

Not sure if you've seen the movie The Hunt, but there's a scene in it where Betty Gilpin visits a gas station and her last line in it is all I can hear here. Fun movie for her alone, but if you want a spoiler-ish scene then enjoy. (violence warning) youtu.be/uYx9KhXbxd8

I was listening to Jelani Cobb being interviewed and that man sounded very tired and exceedingly proud.
Avatar
Aww, that's great. Did he confirm that he was threatened with arrest? I've been wondering
Avatar
I've seen no credible reporting that he was threatened with arrest. And he was giving TV interviews to various outlets during the night of the raid. I suspect the answer is either: (1) no, he wasn't threatened with arrest; or (2) it happened on a different night.

I keep meaning to go back through the recording of WKCR's broadcast and find the clip where they described the interaction—I *believe* that's the source of this story
Avatar
Yeah from what I remember it sounded like it was an indirect threat to the students like ‘yeah? we’ll arrest your dean too.’
Avatar
I posted about this as soon as I heard the WKCR reporter say it live, so it was 10:30-10:32pm, if that helps. And it could have been a threat directed to the student reporter
Avatar
Yes, I was listening on Tuesday night for hours. WKCR did say that he was also threatened w/arrest.
Avatar
But, in the interview w/him on CJR he said that he wasn't personally or individually threatened w/arrest, the cops said it to a group of ppl of which he was a part. But still...it's bs that the NYPD would tell them that.
Avatar
as he was on the phone with one of the cable news anchors, forget which channel, he was audibly interrupted and said to someone "no, i'm the dean, i'm the dean here" or something to that effect but then he just continued the phone interview, and my guess is someone ran with that moment
Avatar
He didn’t mention that as far as I recall. He was very gracious in crediting the student journos as being self-motivated to cover the story.

Thank you for this! I had been looking for interviews with him.
Avatar
When he was asked on MSNBC day after he made it sound like it was something less than in his mind. It was a non answer.

I could listen to Jelani Cobb read from a shopping list. That man knows how to communicate more effectively than anyone else in the business. He's the best!

The Pulitzer Prize Board has the potential to do the funniest thing with this. (To avoid potential confusion, I mean they should give an award to these student reporters)

That reporters will rabidly defend Fox News against mild criticism and run hit jobs against uni admin over some right wing “⚔️” BS but not absolutely ruin the NYPD and uni admin for actual 1st amendment misconduct is …
Avatar
This is beyond disgusting. This fully breaks the students first amendment right to free speech. Demanding media that they aren't entitled to? Really?
Avatar
We're finding out that NYPD is a branch of Mossad.

They are very, very impressive
