How would an administration deliberately seeking to make things as chaotic and unpopular as possible act differently than Columbia or USC?

Short of calling artillery in on their position, I’m stumped

Cable news would have to call their doctor after 4 hours if they called in a tomahawk cruise missile strike.

Hi, I'm an alum of New College of Florida, and....

Ah yes, the broken arrow campus communications strategy. Always a crowd pleaser.

Oh, no, there's an easy answer. They could've asked Trump for help.

University presidents everywhere when seeing this…🤔

They could require that all protests and police beatings be organized through Blackboard Learn.

Thank you all for joining in my Blackboard outrage.

Didn't expect an eighth amendment issue today.

well, UCLA had a bunch of pro-Israel protesters come in last night and try to beat the shit out of the pro-Palestine protesters, and UCLA security sat there and watched and LAPD let it go on for hours. So ... that?
Avatar
It's almost as though they're recreating the war over here. Honestly, I'm just disgusted with both sides AND the universities.
Avatar
When is the deadline to accept admission? I'm curious what sort of calls the admission offices all around the country are getting right now from fairly bright students.

Hahahaha! I guess they'll see what the fallout is fairly quickly then. (My guess is no real net change. The appalled parents/students probably offset the ones with no real issues with the admin decision.) But still, I suspect the class of 2028 is not yet formed.

This would be a good long form journalism piece in 2025

Call in the Philadelphia Police from, say, 1985

Those cops all have bad knees now. Pretty confident the kids can take them.

The Venn diagram of people who will get this reference is probably very small, but I kinda want to see Columbia’s commencement just to watch the president get booed like Dominik Mysterio or Gary Bettman. She has what folks in the pro wrestling community call “nuclear heat,” and it’s well-deserved.

"Bah gawd that's Jelani Cobb's music"

Which naturally raises the question, "What would Jelani Cobb's entrance music be?"

Toss up between “Simon Says” and “Sound of the Police”

Many people have posited for decades that no university could possibly exceed Columbia's dogged ability at making things as chaotic and unpopular as possible.

Some sort of lottery system, like the Green Drazi and Purple Drazi from the TV show Babylon 5. You get randomly assigned a headband and then half the campus is required to attack you regardless of whether you avoid the conflict.
Avatar
Avatar
Maybe throw in some COVID19 or H5N1 disinformation? They could certainly dig their whole deeper firing some faculty . . .

Avatar
"Fine, we're just going to burn the campus to the ground! Let's see how you protest then!"
Avatar
Given that Trump's function and apparent strategy is as a chaos actor, I sometimes wonder whether some of his rich allies are calling these shots behind the scenes, accomplishing the chaos that comprises Trumpism.
Avatar
Well, I haven't followed everything, but I'm not sure either of those two schools has had cops arrest faculty (Emory, Cal Poly Humboldt) or had cops stand idly by while pro-Israeli counterdemonstrators made an armed attack on the Palestinian supporters (UCLA). They're making a good go of it, though.

i think what would have made me violent was closing the library during finals week

And here is a graduating class that will never donate one cent to your endowment for the rest of their lives.

Disgusted Columbia alums: consider rerouting your donations to the campus media whose fearless reporting shames their elders in the profession: Columbia Daily Spectator (a CU association I'm still proud to hold): www.specpublishing.com/donate-1

The students can't disrupt and shut down campus if we disrupt and shut it down first...

It’s super cool to consign a generation of kids random leaderless interruptions to educational promises, whether by fear driven boards, outsider’s demands, or pandemics. Sure to not have any consequences across the board

What happened at Cornell after the protests in 69 (I was there) is classes continued for the last few weeks and we all got pass/fail for the semester. SDS guys lived in my apt over the summer and everything reverted to normal in the fall. Except Donald Kagan my favorite prof left in disgust for Yale
Avatar
Their consistency is almost impressive. They never took the right step even once, by accident
Avatar
Seems like Columbia is arguing for the point that the college ranking system has jack-all to do with how interested the school is in providing a good education to the students who are supposedly the primary purpose of the school's existence.

Also 13,000 children dead and 10 children A DAY lose a limb. Did they ever consider that the demonstrators had good reason to protest?
