They’ve rejected the request for private meetings, which means Democrats can either insist on public hearings or roll over and play dead.
BREAKING: Chief Justice John Roberts responds to Sens. Durbin and Whitehouse, writes that Justice Alito responded regarding recusal questions and that a meeting with Durbin and Whitehouse “would be inadvisable.” Background on Alito’s letter: www.lawdork.com/p/sam-alito-...

I know which way I'm betting but just once I'd like to be wrong, you know?

Senator Durbin's number is 202-224-2152. I just called, and expressed this constituent's strong views with the aide.

Now if we could only get through to him about how bad an idea KOSTA is......

Hope everybody contacts their electeds

I'll keep bugging Durbin but when I contacted him about KOSA I got a form letter back about how proud he was to co-sponsor it

I was like good lord did anyone even READ what I wrote? (I hate making calls, but maybe it's time to suck it up)

I do too but I'm lucky to have a really good rep and I only ever contact her office to tell them I'm grateful so those are very pleasant calls to make
Avatar
I'm not sure that was helpful actually lol

My rep is solid; Duckworth has done some good things, but Durbin is proving increasingly useless

Are you more comfortable showing up in person? If it's logistically possible for you, congresscritters often take that level of commitment more seriously!

I look back at being taught in elementary school that the three branches of government provide checks and balances on each other And laugh and laugh and cry

I wonder if public outcry from hearings would be enough to overcome the institutional inertia and make reformatory legislation more likely.
Avatar
Avatar
I think the answer is almost certainly no, but that doesn't mean hearings wouldn't be a desperately-needed form of civic hygiene.

Won't it be great if Alito defies a Congressional subpoena? Originalist, my ass.

If this was Harry Reid's senate, I bet he would find some creative options.

I'm sure they'll do something. They'll say we need to vote in case of another vacancy then fundraise off it.

Roberts's reasons for rejecting a private meeting are quite sound, IMHO. There shouldn't be backroom meetings between members of the court at members of Congress (esp just from one party). Any meetings should be out in the sunshine, so yes, the Senate should have public hearings.

What's the reward for correctly guessing which one they do
Avatar
Luckily they have a well known history of *checks notes* oh no

checks and balances? in this economy?
Meeting with elected leaders with "an interest in matters currently pending before the Court" would be highly inappropriate. Meeting with billionaires with matters pending, or flying the flags of those with matters pending, on the other hand, maintains the appearance of impartiality. GTFOH

Ooo, ooo, I know which one they'll do! Pick me professor! Pick me!
Durbin is pre-deceased as far forcing any issue is concerned.

Historian classmate offers a novel theory: "This seemingly confirms my theory that Roberts leaked the Alito flag story. I think he’s telling them, encouraging them, really, to have public hearings."

We didn't appoint a vacant seat while we HAD A DEM IN THE WHITE HOUSE. How do we think this is about to go.

We know what the Dems are going to do, especially the Dems who kept and still a fear of the Reagan Revolution in their heads for the last 50 years. The cycle is GOP screaming wildly, media picks it up, Dems move right in order to appear "moderate". Repeat for 50 years, and here we are.

"play" is doing a lot of work there.

He's right to reject the private meetings -- that's a correct decision. Sadly, Roberts has mishandled so much up to this point that it's impossible to give him the slightest credit for this call. While technically correct, this decision just furthers the prior wrongdoing. He's Leo middle management.

The corruption of the Supreme Court is too big of a problem for Democratic leadership to handle. Too much difficulty, too much risk to them personally. They'll punt and we'll all pay for it. I would love to be wrong on this.

One of my Senators is on the Judiciary Committee. I've emailed her and asked for public congressional oversight into Supreme Court corruption and support for the January 6th insurrection. I invite others to do the same.

Public hearings for what purpose?
