BREAKING: Chief Justice John Roberts responds to Sens. Durbin and Whitehouse, writes that Justice Alito responded regarding recusal questions and that a meeting with Durbin and Whitehouse “would be inadvisable.”
Background on Alito’s letter: www.lawdork.com/p/sam-alito-...
Are you more comfortable showing up in person? If it's logistically possible for you, congresscritters often take that level of commitment more seriously!
I look back at being taught in elementary school that the three branches of government provide checks and balances on each other
And laugh and laugh and cry
Roberts's reasons for rejecting a private meeting are quite sound, IMHO. There shouldn't be backroom meetings between members of the court at members of Congress (esp just from one party).
Any meetings should be out in the sunshine, so yes, the Senate should have public hearings.
Meeting with elected leaders with "an interest in matters currently pending before the Court" would be highly inappropriate. Meeting with billionaires with matters pending, or flying the flags of those with matters pending, on the other hand, maintains the appearance of impartiality. GTFOH
Historian classmate offers a novel theory: "This seemingly confirms my theory that Roberts leaked the Alito flag story. I think he’s telling them, encouraging them, really, to have public hearings."
We know what the Dems are going to do, especially the Dems who kept and still a fear of the Reagan Revolution in their heads for the last 50 years.
The cycle is GOP screaming wildly, media picks it up, Dems move right in order to appear "moderate". Repeat for 50 years, and here we are.
He's right to reject the private meetings -- that's a correct decision. Sadly, Roberts has mishandled so much up to this point that it's impossible to give him the slightest credit for this call. While technically correct, this decision just furthers the prior wrongdoing. He's Leo middle management.
The corruption of the Supreme Court is too big of a problem for Democratic leadership to handle. Too much difficulty, too much risk to them personally. They'll punt and we'll all pay for it. I would love to be wrong on this.
One of my Senators is on the Judiciary Committee. I've emailed her and asked for public congressional oversight into Supreme Court corruption and support for the January 6th insurrection.
I invite others to do the same.
