A lot of people in this thread need to understand how drug laws were designed and used. It’s abhorrent that a single person is in jail for weed crimes, but the impact on the black community was designed to be as devastating as possible. Being freed first is the least we can fucking do.

Free them, clean those records, and if I’m so bold, pay them for the income they lost so they can support their families

Let's see, median income is 100K per year, adjusted to 200K for damages, back interest at 25%, they owe them 250K per year base

This reminds me of someone opening a "fine dining" restaurant for dogs that I read about after I got back from volunteering. Hadda go take a walk.

It’s Black History Month.

we should empty the jail cells for Cannabis "crimes" for everyone, whatever month it is... starting 60 years ago.

I am a Black man. It is Black History Month. Is it ok if I focus on my people just this one time. Can I have that permission from you.

Also, I guarantee you if we're emptying the prisons of Black folks locked up for pot, it's because we've already let everyone else go. White folks that can't see our own freedom in the freedom of Black people have not done enough reading.
Avatar
Yeah I really love this guys mental image where they let all the Black potheads out but somehow all the White ones are still behind bars and they look so sad
Avatar
this is huge problem when it comes to medical cannabis, which prices out far too many people and leaves cops to police non-violent, no-victim behaviors. there's so much still to be done. we need to end prohibition now, exonerate the incarcerated and stop the games...

all convictions matter all drug convictions matter why are you so focused on just the black ones??

Lol I'm getting lotta likes Hoping no one's doing it thinking I'm serious 🫠

Listening. Learning. Growing.

The campaign to make cannabis illegal was about how it made "degenerate races" prone to violence & rape & how "reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men." Then black people were 4 times more likely to be arrested, & got longer sentences when convicted. You need to take a seat.

Sometimes I have thoughts in my head and I don't post them on the internet. I wish other people would do the same before leaving goofy comments 😭

Absolutely okay with me, not that you need my permission in the first place. But thank you for the kindness.

it's very important to remember that a wildly disproportionate amount of people charged with and incarcerated for cannabis crime were Black. and legalization actually exacerbated that effect. it's legal for some people. not for others.
Avatar
Avatar
This is some serious "all lives matter" vibes. No one is saying other ethnicities should rot in jail. It's ok to focus on a specific marginalized group that is disproportionately affected by an issue, such as black men making up the majority of the prison population for drug charges.

Who are the people most likely to be arrested and convicted for cannabis? I'll give you a hint. It's Black people who are 3.73 times more likely to be arrested than white people for cannabis. According to the ACLU's website.

that’s not the point, mid white shark

But it is completely irrelevant. The subtext you're missing is that Black folks are disproportionately locked up for marijuana-related "crimes."
Avatar
Also, Dr. Avg White Shark, there is a specific phenomenon being commented on here: white supremacy cares about animals more than about Black people. Thus, pets are now benefiting from cannabis decriminalization even as Black people are still disproportionately in jail for cannabis.
Avatar
Now I feel like this girl. Thanks a lot.
Avatar
absolutely they are. just keep the jail cell open is all I'm saying... nobody should be locked up for cannabis. nobody.
Avatar
True, but we're talking about Black people right now and you're minimizing key points. Do yourself a favor and learn to listen.
