BlueSky / ATP hot take: Best think bsky could do right now is seed a new App and foster it into independence. With a new format and vibe but still connected to bsky. Cuz place and culture aren't modular. Diversity requires a tapestry of "spaces", which requires multiple AppViews on ATP. 1/

One of the final results of the Wil Wheaton blocklist fiasco was the permanent delegitimization of mastodon to anyone with more clout than a c-list podcaster. I'm just remembering this for no reason. I was there when it happened live.

When an autistic person shares an experience similar to yours when you are talking about something, we’re not trying to make it about us, we are giving you or citations for our empathy. Not just, “I feel you.” It’s, “I feel you and here’s exactly why!” And I prefer this!

being in my late thirties feels like I'm a third of the way into playing a really involved rpg and have only just got a sufficient handle on the game mechanics to realise all the ways I've been playing it wrong, only I can't restart or roll a new character and cross-classing late is punitive.

imagine how much great art could have been created if we took a fraction of the money spent on getting computers to make shitty art and gave it to actual artists

Of course thats your contention. Youre a 1st year programmer. You just got finished writin some REST backend, node.js probably. Youre gonna be convinced of that til next month you get to Rob Pike and then youre gonna be talkin about goroutines and message passing and how concurrency isnt parallelism

There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once, we will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free. - Citizen G'Kar

Part of a good thread that illustrates why I don’t hang out on Twitter/X anymore
There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.

Yesterday, I shared this same Canada Day thread on Bluesky, Threads, and X. Here's what I found. 🧵
“Canada is such a northern country, don’t we want a little global warming?” I often hear. In a nutshell, NO. We’re warming 2x faster than the rest of the world, driving extreme heat, flood, and sea level rise we are not prepared for. The wildfire season started in Feb this year. Feb! #canadaday

Found a great new social media platform, it lets you form connected communities of like-minded people with moderation handled by folks in that community, there are private accounts, an active desire not to add annoying new "engagement" features all the time... Even has video and custom emoji!

until i am proven otherwise (it really just takes the opportunity to either have it proven or not) i strongly believe that people will care about decentraliziation as soon as they are able to use their single identity across applications. to me one of the top pros that atproto has.

Hot (naive?) takes about labelers: * They're main problem is being vulnerable to self-fulfilling prophecy. "They can't work" becomes true if enough believe it. * Non-trivial moderation stances/cultures will succeed in a form closer to fedi-style instances, comprising custom AppViews &/or PDSs 1/

Is it a millennial thing to just start hating basically every social media platform for one reason or another? Is this our version of telling people to get off our lawn? For every video YT recommends to me about why woke is ruining star wars, I get closer to saying "just burn it all down".

If Bluesky/atproto continues to grow (and that's indeed why I'm here!) part of the promise is to have account portability that works across apps on the ecosystem, so even for our own labeller, we'd want people to have their labels/bans roll off depending on the policy violation.

composable moderation solves this by making everyone realize that moderation is hard
Okay... basically everyone on social media (and plenty of people off social media) have very strong opinions on how content moderation should work. But very few of them have actually *done* content moderation...

Newspapers will run obituaries of the lead singer of a band that had one hit decades ago. Scientists not so much. When Shannon died, @nytimes.com ran one but almost no one else. And now Ed Stone has died and there is no obituary that I can find. Scientists get no respect.

We got tricked by science fiction into thinking a futuristic city is all about flying cars and crystal towers and hologram billboards but what it really looks like is nice apartment blocks, good mass transit, pedestrian zones with shade trees and safe bike lanes.

But you will notice that I stopped being quite so pessimistic about Bluesky's in-house T&S when they hired Aaron! He was an *excellent* hire and I have a great deal of confidence in him (and sympathy for having to solve these problems, the poor bastard, heh)
