Excited to introduce a project I've been working on for a long time: a thorough comparison of Biden and Trump on the issues. "The stakes, not the odds," to borrow from Jay Rosen. The initial version has 6 topics, but I'll be adding more, as well as updating with new statements/policies. Gift link:
Where Joe Biden and Donald Trump Stand on the Issueswww.nytimes.com Here’s what President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump have done and want to do on abortion, democracy, the economy, immigration, Israel and Gaza, and Social Security and Medicare.

Each topic starts with a brief comparison, and then you can delve deeper. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Click on one of the sub-topics — say, "transfer of power" from the screenshot above — and there's much more. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Are there topics you'd like me to add? Let me know. (Current to-do list, in alphabetical order, not order of priority: China, climate, crime, education, guns, health care, labor, public health, technology, trans rights, Ukraine.)

I'd be remiss if I didn't add that, while my byline is on this project, it was a huge group effort — especially by my colleagues Nico Chilla and Rebecca Lieberman, who are responsible for the design.

And more than a dozen colleagues with subject-matter expertise in various areas reviewed a section or a paragraph or even just a sentence. For example, I am not an expert on Federal Reserve policy, but my colleague Jeanna Smialek is, so she reviewed what I wrote about interest rates.
Avatar
beyond climate-specific emissions and energy, it'd be good to include a general "environment" section that covers air and water pollution, endangered species and habitat protection, mining/extraction, and public lands conservation
Avatar
Thank you for writing this. I'd definitely like to see a climate section in there. I'd also like to see more emphasis on actions taken than statements made, but overall great work.

Within education, a few suggestions: -College loan repayment plans (e.g., SAVE for Biden, I have no idea for Trump) -Interpretation of Title IX (including and beyond trans rights) -Staffing of Office of Civil Rights (they do the bulk of investigations re Title IX, ADA, IDEA, CRA, etc.)

You have given readers a lot of accurate information! Could an editor possibly add, on the main web front page (or app front) a tiny bit more detail to include “Trump’s 3 justices nullified the federal right to abortion” or some such? It’s a glaring omission to me as is

Good list of topics! Bookmarked

Thank you! I'd request: immigration policy. So charged & so oft-misrepresented. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick at American Immigration Council is a thoughtful & tireless source. (Dara Lind is at AIC too.) Adam Isacson at WOLA also does a lot of on-the-ground plus data. Thanks for this series!
Avatar
Yup, that's one of the initial six topics that published today (abortion, democracy, economy, immigration, Israel/Gaza, Social Security/Medicare). The list in the post you replied to is the additional topics that are still to come.
Avatar
Apologies! Had it queued up to read but hadn’t read yet!🫣 Sorry to make you tap the sign🙃

That's the first topic in the piece!
Avatar
Where are LGBTQ rights?
Avatar
This is an awesome piece, thank you!! Are you able to broaden past just abortion rights? The MAGA crowd is very serious about returning women to confederacy/slave status, the attacks on “DEI” and women in power are just beginning. You might want to do “porn” too since *everything* is porn to them.
Avatar
Ah, misread your ‘to do’ as the list of topics, next time I’ll click through first! Also, I live near your dad in Montclair!

Thanks for YOUR work tho Mr Sulzberger probably dreaming up ways to bothsides this

And I see now, my apologies for not clicking through at first, that you do at least quote his statements about vermin, in your second level detail. I wonder if perhaps those statements might better serve the public in your first level paragraphs. Trump IS his extreme impulsive statements.
Avatar
The vermin statements are in the first-level paragraph that I screenshotted. Are they not appearing on your phone? (I have gotten some reports of display errors on some phones.)
Avatar
They were not on my phone. Thanks for letting me know.
Avatar
Can you send me a screenshot of what you saw? Not because I don't believe you — I do! — but because I'd like to flag it for the design team so they can fix whatever error caused it not to show up.
Avatar
It shows up now. Also, thank you very much for responding. Seeing that this is under Democracy, if I put my user experience hat back on (past career) could also have been my reading error inasmuch as I expected this under Immigration.
Avatar
Let me see if it shows up again. I'm on a laptop now, and I see the correct paragraph.
Avatar
Very very well done and formatted. Thank you.
Avatar
Maggie - its work like yours that keeps me subscribed. Thanks.

I wish you the best of luck in finding your next gig after Sulzberger fires you for this clear example of fact-based journalism. I mean, not a single Republican operative given anonymity! Zero obsession over Biden’s age! That’s unacceptable!

How does one determine Trump's stance on any issue when it changes depending on who he's talking to? Why not be honest and say he doesn't believe in anything beyond his own survival? To hell with the country.
Avatar
Trump is a liar, but he has 4 years of track record.
Avatar
*bullshitter Liars know they're lying to you but want you to believe them. Bullshitters don't know and don't care whether what they're saying is true or not, and they don't care whether you believe them, as long as you give them what they want. There is no truth or falsehood to them, just utility.
Avatar
They also believe everyone else is bullshitting, so they get really angry with people who talk about truth. In their world there is only what you want and what you need to say to get it - doesn't occur to them that there is a reality under that.
Avatar
Trump routinely does both.
Avatar
I've never seen a shred of evidence that he cares whether anyone believes what he's saying. He's a walking id. He mashes buttons until the reward comes out of the slot. Sometimes he remembers which buttons made the reward come out last time and mashes them again.
Avatar
He was convicted of lying in NY state court not so long ago, with specific intent to deceive.
Avatar
As an institution The Times seems to disregard very thoughtful critiques about how its coverage boosts Trump. I’m really delighted that you cited Jay Rosen - all the horserace/polling coverage erases the existential stakes.
Avatar
Avatar
This is a surprise. Why would we elevate a monster to the level of actually having a stand on the issues? Why aren’t we focusing on why he’s not in jail and other double standards in American jurisprudence?
Avatar
Because that isn't moving the needle
Avatar
please, i have no idea what needle you are referring to. all i see are bumpstocks
Avatar
"Why he's not in jail" isn't a thing a lot of people care about more than, say, grocery prices, or biden's old man stink, because this country is filled to the brim with rubes and dullards. On a related note, ima go back to doomsday prepping and browsing property abroad

To fail to note that Trump has expressly advocated for criminalizing abortion and mere weeks ago told a group that seeks the death penalty for abortion that it would "make a comeback" under a second Trump Admin makes me wonder if you do, in fact, understand the "stakes."

great work, maggie. pretty clear and concise!
