I was in Ruidoso a couple weeks ago for a conference, and we were all watching the Blue 2 Fire. Heavily forested and lots of winding roads. Hope they can hold this new fire!

I finished packing up my classroom a week ago. I did not start the last school year expecting it to be my last here, but a series of nagging dissatisfactions and changes in my personal life led to a point where it was almost inevitable.

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

I am starting to wonder about the Venn diagram of @charliejane.bsky.social's watchlists and mine (or my wife's, to be more accurate--she picks the shows and I trust her judgement).
I'm begging everyone who has Peacock to watch We Are Lady Parts season 2. It's so good and I need more of this show. Or if you don't have Peacock, pony up for just one month so you can watch this incredible show. Please.

I'm out. Saw one with a holographic wrap this week! It was... a choice.
everyone is the world is playing CYBERSTRUCK, the fun new mandatory game in which you are eliminated when you see your first cybertruck in the wild rules are similar to whamageddon, but with no end date: • the cybertruck must be real, in the wild • as soon as you notice the cybertruck, you are out

Josh Hawley: i'm going to punch 100 kittens in the throat AOC: what the hell, we shouldn't be punching *any* kittens (Manchin and Romney co-sponsor the Punch 50 Kittens in the Throat Act of 2024) op-ed columnist: finally, reasonable compromise
Right, this is a good illustrator of the way Beltway narratives tend to conflate “the middle” with “moderation”

You know what, point to all the superhero writers who have their villains lay out the plan in detail out loud. You were right. They do indeed do that. It turns out the thing you got wrong is the part where the good guys stop them. You didn't write unrealistic villains, you wrote unrealistic heroes.

I guess my primary comment about this is that it feels that the pandemic ushered in an era in which faculty are supposed to extend endless compassion to students (fine!) but neither the students nor the conditions of academia extend compassion to us. And that is really, really hard.
All the "solutions" proposed in this involve more unpaid work from faculty to manage our own feelings about being overstretched. I don't want a training, a coffee group, or a paid external speaker about about compassion fatigue. I want higher pay, admin support, & actual vacation time.

In the past few weeks, three former students I taught in MIDDLE school joined the staff. This adds to the two who have been working with me for more than a year now. I guess I have been here a while.

I wrote about Taylor Lorenz, ambulance chasing in the face of trans trauma, and why articles about dead trans kids should probably actually be about those dead trans kids. It's a lot to say but I might as well fucking say it all: jude-doyle.ghost.io/i-dont-care-...

A fundamental honour & privilege of parenthood is getting to watch your children become themselves, which feels multiplied a thousandfold when you parent trans kids. I grieve that Nex & their parents didn’t get to continue that journey together
It’s obscene that these parents have to bury their child but it sounds like Nex knew they were loved in a way a lot of parents regret not communicating

This is so important and not mentioned enough. The president does not (or, at least, should not) make decisions in a vacuum. The people around them make a difference.
Biden may be elderly and have a failing memory, but he has a fantastic team. Trump may be elderly and have a failing mind, but he has...can I openly use such terminology without getting the Adult Content tag?

Sometimes working with students makes me feel young and reminds me of my passions. And sometimes they talk about Reagan as just a figure in the history textbook and I feel every single one of my years.

14yo has loved being scared for as long as I can remember. But "Coraline" is the only movie to date that he asked us to stop because it was too much. (He was much younger then and has since seen it multiple times.)
Have been seeing the 15th anniversary posts about "Coraline" and couldn't remember how soon after it came out I saw it. This answered my question. And I am still unnerved by button eyes. @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com

one of the not very profound epiphanies I’ve had recently is: we’re still in 2020. still in mass illness, still in racial injustice, still in disciplinary conflict. we may feel exhausted because we are asked to pretend that these things are not true, that we are “back to normal”
