Reminded of 20+ years ago when my students were SHOCKED that I recognized Beastie Boys lyrics.
"I have this whole thing with Bohemian Rhapsody, I don't know if you know that song?" My heart, Gen Z, my heart. Y'all are precious.

For the people who don’t have time, here’s your Readers Digest version. You’re welcome.

My baseline is a 7 or 8, and I can do that without it being apparent to those around me. I had a physician's assistant question how I could function, and my response was, "I don't really have a choice." People w/o chronic pain just don't understand.

I had a similar experience where the diagnosis was obvious (genetics, textbook symptoms, X-rays showing the pattern of bone deposits). But it would have been nice to have a baseline on the inflammation and be able to track it. Sounds like a pattern in AS care.

There seems to be a level of "performing disability" in order to get taken seriously. Until you fit the expected behavior/presentation, they just don't take it seriously.

And yet, when you want an MRI, they will tell you it's not necessary--whatever pushes things further down the road. So much deflection!

Found out about the tear after accepting position in another district, so two transitions (COBRA and then new insurance) coming up. At least it's the same basic network throughout, but new geographic location. And definitely not starting new specialist copays before I am settled!

Hate the punting! Moving is giving me an opportunity to switch rheums. Previous one establishes patient and then hands over to CNP. Hip pain was treated as bursitis for 4 years. Got PCP to order MRI (because rheum's office said unnecessary) and I have a labral tear, no signs of bursitis.

I was in Ruidoso a couple weeks ago for a conference, and we were all watching the Blue 2 Fire. Heavily forested and lots of winding roads. Hope they can hold this new fire!
altitude of 7,000 feet and population of 8,000 all them ordered to immediately evacuate due to dangerous and fast spreading 5,500+ acre 0% contaimed wildfire this is Ruidoso New Mexico about 60 miles to the west of where im at lots of stuff to burn this is apocalypse-level disaster very very bad

I finished packing up my classroom a week ago. I did not start the last school year expecting it to be my last here, but a series of nagging dissatisfactions and changes in my personal life led to a point where it was almost inevitable.

I needed a big change. At the beginning of August, I am switching subjects, districts, states. I'll be teaching Math at the high school I graduated from (mumble, mumble) years ago.

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

I have come back to this thread multiple times and tear up with each reading. 🐾

I am starting to wonder about the Venn diagram of @charliejane.bsky.social's watchlists and mine (or my wife's, to be more accurate--she picks the shows and I trust her judgement).
I'm begging everyone who has Peacock to watch We Are Lady Parts season 2. It's so good and I need more of this show. Or if you don't have Peacock, pony up for just one month so you can watch this incredible show. Please.

Thought maybe a former student was making my smoothie, but wasn't sure, due to mask and different hair. Down the road, I noticed this:

Our wrinkle is that I ended up taking a job near our new house (a couple years earlier than planned), so now I have to move books I took to my classroom (to avoid moving them with the other stuff). 😬

I'm out. Saw one with a holographic wrap this week! It was... a choice.
everyone is the world is playing CYBERSTRUCK, the fun new mandatory game in which you are eliminated when you see your first cybertruck in the wild rules are similar to whamageddon, but with no end date: • the cybertruck must be real, in the wild • as soon as you notice the cybertruck, you are out

We're doing a multi-part move too, except we moved in with in-laws with only the basics and moved everything else to the house we'll be fixing up for long-term (but in a different state). When the movers put everything in the house, we were falling over boxes. Going to be a LONG project!

Right, this is a good illustrator of the way Beltway narratives tend to conflate “the middle” with “moderation”

Yes, but how did the student's film turn out?

You know what, point to all the superhero writers who have their villains lay out the plan in detail out loud. You were right. They do indeed do that. It turns out the thing you got wrong is the part where the good guys stop them. You didn't write unrealistic villains, you wrote unrealistic heroes.

I guess my primary comment about this is that it feels that the pandemic ushered in an era in which faculty are supposed to extend endless compassion to students (fine!) but neither the students nor the conditions of academia extend compassion to us. And that is really, really hard.
All the "solutions" proposed in this involve more unpaid work from faculty to manage our own feelings about being overstretched. I don't want a training, a coffee group, or a paid external speaker about about compassion fatigue. I want higher pay, admin support, & actual vacation time.

Parable of the Sower starts in July 2024, with such enclaves already in place. I guess some people are trying to get us there as close to that as possible?!

In the past few weeks, three former students I taught in MIDDLE school joined the staff. This adds to the two who have been working with me for more than a year now. I guess I have been here a while.
