dunno if you guys saw this but the order behind benedictine college was not super happy with harrison butker's comments

I am afraid this is one of those things where you're going to have to accept that this is scathing in the context of nuns making a public statement

I still feel like jesuits are the goat in terms of catholic religious orders

Jesuits are my fave like philosophically, but since there are no women Jesuits, I’ve gotta say that monk or nun, I’ve never known a shitty Benedictine my mom rolled deep with the monks of Mount Angel Abbey and every one of those old dudes was a bro
Avatar
I attended the only all boys Dominican high school in the US. Man did they have Jesuit jokes!
Avatar
This feels somehow midwestern to me.
Avatar
my dad was a jesuit (in the midwest) so I am biased
Avatar
the jesuits i’ve known recently were self-important libertarian-esque assholes, which i was not expecting
Avatar
The Jesuits I grew up with were all communists who drove motorcycles - aging South American liberation theologists. It's a shame they've mostly died off.

This feels extremely Jesuit to me. I have a deep, unshakeable affection for the Jebbies but they are known for being gigantic self-important a-holes. There can only ever be one smartest person in the room at any given moment, and Jesuits reserve that spot for themselves, in every circumstance.

It's hella Midwestern. Decency, perspective, measured tone. It's not the worst thing.

I’m a Jesuit fan, but the Sisters are the unsung heroes of Catholic clergy. Smart, rad af, just plugging away, doing the work below the radar every day.

Like all Catholic kids, we made jokes about the Sisters Of No Mercy. But as I grew up in my Catholic education, and ditched the irrational aspects of my authority complex, I came to appreciate just how amazing they were, and how lucky I was to be educated by them.

Catholic green berets. (Jesuit high school)

Maryknoll can be pretty cool.
Avatar
I’m lucky that I went to a Jesuit high school so I learned the Bible from the moderate contextualist view of a fallible-human-made text of its era instead of the infallible Word Of God that the other Catholics love so much.
Avatar
They’re no Trappists, but they’re pretty good.
Avatar
No way… Benedictines rule!
Avatar
Jesuits are pretty much the GOAT in general. They always win, just like the casinos, and you do not fuck with them.
Avatar
They're colonizers and complete asshats, for the most part.

Are you familiar with the Sikh faith?

You might appreciate this joke: bsky.app/profile/joei...
My very not-Catholic uncle liked this joke: A Jesuit and a Benedictine were debating which of their Orders was superior. The Jesuit praised the spiritual battles fought by his brethren across the world; while the Benedictine spoke warmly of the cloistered life, regulated by vows. 1/3

The intense "we're Vatican II, we don't know what buttkicker7 is up to over there" vibes.
Avatar
Yeah that jumped out at me, that's an extremely specific and purposeful reference.
Avatar
Might as well be "look, we know he's a tradcath, Tridentine or otherwise, and that Kansas City's bishop lets people get up to a lot of heretical shit, so we're snitching because we don't want this."
Avatar
Wow--they sharpened their knives and eviscerated that speech! (Also him, but the good Sisters wouldn't do that directly; they're subtle.)

As Sr. Chittister wrote: ""The moment a woman comes home to herself, the moment she knows that she has become a person of influence, an artist of her life, a sculptor of her universe, a person with rights and responsibilities who is respected and recognized, the resurrection of the world begins."
Avatar
Specifically mentioning their support of Vatican II and Pope Francis made my eyes bug out a little.
Avatar
This seems spot on for Benedictines, who count Joan Chittister among them
Avatar
You know you dun fucked up when the nuns come for you
Avatar
Feel like his mom probably thinks he’s a close minded idiot as well…
Avatar
Well then his mom and I have something in common
Avatar
The most straightforward is to begin just ignoring the court’s mandates en masse
Avatar
I'm gleefully imaging how awkward the next family dinner is going to be at their house.
Avatar
"I told your mom I thought you were an asshole; she said, 'Yes, I think you're right."
I am not sure why we’re all giving her a pass. Never underestimate the power of white women to be hypocritically shitty.
Avatar
Butker’s speech was a great example of what happens when you invest so heavily in package-deal ethics that you forget anyone doesn’t.

Sisters telling Butker to get thee to a nunnery

If nuns are going to stand up for women's rights, I will support those nuns. If nuns are going to stand up against a medieval interpretation of things interpretable, I will support those nuns. 👍

OK but, apart from all the rest of it: "St. Scholastica"? [invokes DuckDuckGo] huh en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scholas...

Honestly, coolest name ever for a sainted nun.
Avatar
Yeah, there was a high school with that name in Chicago. Just recently closed for good, turned into apartments I think
Avatar
Oh man, he made that speech at a college run by NUNS?
Avatar
Avatar
It's not run by nuns. It's run by the administration, like every other college. The nuns are the hired help. Except they don't get paid.
