the conservative legal movement is a conspiracy against the rule of law and self-government, and they're close to winning.
Remember that DOJ sought expedited review of this issue from the Court last year (skipping the circuit courts). They refused and punted it to the DC Circuit, which took months; then dilly dallied all this time after the DC Circuit’s decision, before finally issuing a grant. It’s pretty transparent.

Honestly the best chance we had was in 2021 when Dems still controlled Congress - expel the legislators who voted against certifying the election from Congress, use the rump majorities to pass court reform/expansion. bsky.app/profile/mara...
Biden should pack the court NOW. Just elevate circuit court judges who have already been confirmed to make it a at least a 7-6 liberal majority.

That would've been an unprecedented and extreme manuever and basically a counter-coup but as I said at the time, waiting longer to take a step like that will make the remaining options to fix things shrink and grow even less appealing.

Instead of a reckoning with how bad we are screwed by the ever-tightening vice of illegitimate GOP power grabs, we just got denial, and a plan of "maybe the Dems can just pull an inside straight in every single election going forward and never lose power again" and folks, it's not going great!

Oh they probably won't actually rule that he's above the law, just delay the trial enough so it gets punted until after the election bsky.app/profile/iris...
There are not 5 votes that will say the president is above the law. I refuse to believe this.

It's true that every major victory for Republicans in my lifetime has been a complete disaster for this country but Dems winning hasn't done anything to unwind the damage, just an endless one-way ratchet of authoritarianism bsky.app/profile/rinc...
"this is the most important election of our lifetimes" every election forever is both a joke and not actually wrong

Either the noose around our necks tightens or it just stays in place, no one ever is like "maybe we could cut the noose"

[2036] I wish people talking about "just cutting the noose" would learn a little about Congressional procedure 🙄

Exactly The example I keep using is the endgame of the Peloponnesian War. Athens had to win every battle, and had a pretty good string, but Sparta needed only one, and that was it. We can't win every election to keep the jackboots off our necks. We need to break the paradigm.

Democrats lack the public Support for removing the noose. We're a nation of choking enthusiasts.

Right? My lifetime saw Reagan, Bush, Bush 2, and Trump. Huge pushes to the right and a complete overhaul of the court. We fucking tread water when Dems are in charge. Always want to tear my hair out

I remember how optimistic I was in 2008 given the size of the Democratic win ... sigh

Obama dismantling the army that got him elected was the gift to the Republicans that got them the 2010 midterms. It was absolutely bananas.

He also undercut the GFC stimulus needed any about 3x so there was that too

The Democrats success under Biden has been exactly in proportion to how they understood their failures under Obama.

Republicans ginned up the racial resentment to great effect to win back House.

Clinton’s appointments & Obama’s both largely negated Reagan, Bush, & Bush. The three under Trump are the trouble

What really kills me is all the ways we manage to sink a little more even when we have a Dem who is helping us tread water... it is crazy making.

Democratic fecklessness is almost as responsible as Republican authoritarianism. DC statehood being fruit hanging so low as to be on the ground is simply maddening. The Democrats genuinely seem to not want to win.

I don’t disagree, but it is important to remember that the kind of destruction the ever-increasingly fascist GOP unleashes is not easily undone.
