the editor of the New York Times reacting to a potential Trump second term with “fasten your seatbelts” is so deeply vile i can’t wrap my mind around it. these people have detached themselves so completely from the things they cover that the rise of fascism becomes just something exciting to watch
I'm no ivy league fail upward brunchlord news professional, but I feel it's generous to call conspiratorial fascism (managed by a sociopathic manbaby with a fourth grade reading level) "disruptive" that's kind of like saying nuclear annihilation is "modifying"

this is why the idea that journalists have to maintain objectivity through detachment is distinctly dangerous. it demands that context be perpetually stripped away

This feels more like rich/cultural elite insulation from reality to me. The sort of view where politics are something that affects/happens to the little people.

They don't seem to get that their wealth insulates them because the law is on your side when you can afford great lawyers to make sure your civil liberties are never violated. If a regime can lock you up or kill you just because they feel like it, it doesn't matter if you have money.
Avatar
Absolutely. They don't look at the loyalists 'falling' out of windows in Russia think 'oh, that could be me.'

also likely they can all live in Manhattan if they need to

"We're just neutrally calling balls and strikes...in the same manner that Leslie Nielsen did when he disguised himself as an umpire and realized the crowd reaction when he called a strike."

Hey! It’s Guilty-of-RICO Palazzo!!

There's nothing wrong with objectivity per se. It demands that you acknowledge things that are objectively true -- e.g., "Trump is a criminal scumbag running a nakedly fascist campaign" -- and I wish the Times would do more of that, instead if insisting that reality is up for grabs!

There was a Dave Eggers short story (I know) where the narrator is explaining to a child that we’re in a dystopia because we overvalued stupid opinions (99 scientists agree climate change is real but we give the same amount of space to the 1 idiot who doesn’t) that sticks with me.

Idk, I read that quote as someone who excited to cover a Trump presidency: full-time job, team of experts. Sounds like they’re excited at the prospect
Avatar
this isn't detachment! this is pining for the guy; they have been pissed that the masses don't respect them as omniscient sages and have divined that they will be treated as such when working as nazi collaborators

Peter Baker - the ultimate times brainworm journalist - proudly talks about how he does not vote, for that would require having an opinion on things
Avatar
I hate that you can almost feel him getting off on all the drama and clicks from a trump admin

Covering the rise of fascism in Movie Trailer Voice is the kind of thing that will make it - well, not enjoyable per se, but at least grimly amusing - when they get the Trump presidency they want and he uses the Justice Department to liquidate the NYT.

cockroach man dropping a column " I oppose the execution of my dear friend Thomas Friedman, but gosh Trump is showing toughness by doing it!"
Avatar
"Today, he became Presidential!"
Avatar
That sounds good but I’m still not going to vote for him
Avatar
Ngl, a campaign promise for a regularly-scheduled Two Minutes Hate on AG Sulzberger would be a power move...
Avatar
wishcasting like this just curls the monkey paw - the NYT isn't getting liquidated, it's just going to become state media "I told you that you would get tired of winning we won so much that we even made the lame stream media great again!"
Avatar
and conveniently, the fascists won't even have to DO anything to get it, because these guys have been chomping at the bit to be Nazi collaborators since their freshmen year of high school
Avatar
After the message the Supreme Court just sent him, he might literally liquidate them.
Avatar
If there was some way to limit the damage Trump does just to our Establishment Media, I’d vote for him.
Avatar
my favorite thing about seatbelts is how they protect you from fascism
Avatar
I would buy a fascism seatbelt.

this also really got me, like we were supposed to clap and give them a participation trophy as they shit their pants

Rule Number One: Don't Obey In Advance! "but we're quite comfy doing this..."

"Committed to covering every aspect of the story as it unfolds" so they'll be happily live-blogging their own closure and subsequent show trial for disrespecting the Great Leader.
Avatar
"We'll show up and we'll do our jobs" the substitution of these kinds of slogans for actual responses is really worrying.
Avatar
These people are utterly loathsome. And naive.
Avatar
"we'll show up and we'll do our jobs" *is immediately purged for being mean to trump once*
Avatar
Is the Times covering American government or previewing a new the fall drama?
Avatar
Kristallnacht as amusement park ride. what a depraved louche.

"we'll show up and we'll do our jobs" START ANY TIME MUTHERFUCKERS
Avatar
You can practically hear him salivating at the opportunity of "covering every aspect of the story as it unfolds."
Avatar
In today's speech Trump just told car makers they won't have to put seatbelts in any more if he wins and came up with a new slur for people who actually like seat belt laws It's a really mean one I can't say it here

Seems like the phrase "first against the wall" has fallen out of use.

The editor absolutely does not understand that if the coverage challenges Trump in any way they will be imprisoned or killed. They actually believe it will be not much worse then trumps first term and their press credentials will protect them.
Avatar
They’re not just anticipating it, they’re actively encouraging and trying to engineer it
Avatar
Hahaha, he actually thinks they will continue to exist in their current form. Like they won’t be crushed completely or forced to print only what the fascists want.
