Forty-five years ago this morning at 5:30am, at Church Rock, New Mexico, a 50-foot earthen dam containing the radioactive and toxic byproducts of a United Nuclear Corporation uranium mine failed, resulting in the largest single unintentional release of radioactive materials in the United States.

The breach released 1,100 tons of uranium waste and 94 million gallons of radioactive and highly acidic water into the Rio Puerco and across Navajo lands as far as 50 miles downstream. Radioactivity levels near the breach were 7,000 times the allowable US drinking water standard.

In 1979 United Nuclear spilled 94 million gallons of radioactive water into the Puerco river, contaminating the water of the entire Navajo Nation. The state governor refused disaster aid. In 2007 the water was still highly contaminated.

United Nuclear handed out 600 gallons of bottled water. The Navajo Nation needed about 30,000 gallons *per day*. United Nuclear gave them 2% of one day's worth of non-contaminated water.

3 years later, in 1981, the New Mexico and federal government stopped delivering water to the Navajo nation. The Navajos were, 3 years after the largest nuclear spill in US history, completely on their own. No federal disaster status, no state/federal assistance, etc.
