Infant deaths increased after Texas banned abortion in early pregnancywww.statnews.com Since Texas’ ban on abortion went into effect, infant deaths in the state increased by nearly 13%, according to a new analysis published on Monday in JAMA Pediatrics.

Predictable result of forcing nonviable pregnancies to term.
Avatar
Along with a darker possibility: unwanted infants dying due to poor care.
Avatar
“Infant deaths caused by unintentional injuries, which can be associated with unwanted pregnancies, also increased by 20.7%, compared to a 1.1% increase elsewhere in the U.S.”
Avatar
"Among the causes of infant deaths, one increased the most: congenital abnormalities, which increased 22.9% in Texas in children between 2021 and 2022 ... That trend suggests that ...parents were forced to carry a pregnancy to term while knowing their children had little to no chance of survival..."
Avatar
But there are thousands of parents just waiting to adopt all those unwanted fetuses. /forced-birthers.
Avatar
...many of whom have severe abnormalities and may require a lifetime of care (if they survive).

Well that's my cue to start drinking.
Avatar
It’s in line with all the increases in other causes of infant mortality. I see it as people knowing they aren’t ready to take care of an infant.
Avatar
I’d also wonder what the numbers are on healthcare providers dipping out

Since pro-lifers aren't pro-life, this tracks.

The “pro” is short for professional. Life ain’t free homey

Oh look, the exact thing they said we were being hysterical about actually happened exactly how we said it would

"In the rest of the country, infant mortality increased less than 2% over the same period." Someone needs to run the numbers on this, but my suspicion is that the 2% national increase is driven primarily by other states that have enacted abortion bans
Avatar
most likely, but a bit of that could be from covid
Avatar
Probably not! This is from when Texas' abortion law went into affect. I don't know exactly when it was implemented, but Dobbs was exactly two years ago, so deaths from covid should be down in that time span.
Avatar
covid is especially dangerous for pregnant women and fetuses
Avatar
more people were dying of covid in 2022 than they are today, so deaths from covid among pregnant women and infants should have also gone down in the past two years
Avatar
you’re not factoring in cumulative effect from multiple infections plus people letting down their guard in hospitals specifically
Avatar
Probably? I don’t know what the numbers where before Dobbs

Forcing people to give birth to doomed infants increases infant death, news at 9
Avatar
Goddamn. I mean, any increase in infant mortality is bad, but my God. And this is a state where the two largest metros have some of the best L&D and neonatal care in the country too.
Avatar
Curious how this breaks down geographically. The Rio Grande Valley is a long way from Houston’s best hospitals.
Avatar
Guessing demographic availability within those places is also a factor, even if the best hospital for them in Houston and Dallas are both public hospitals.
Avatar
Yeah, sorry, those good hospitals are out of network.
Avatar
Do they, though? I wonder how many have left to avoid being jailed for saving a mother’s life by aborting a fetus.
Avatar
Based on my contacts down there, fewer than you’d expect. Texas Women’s and Texas Children’s are still considered premier internship and residency placements.
Avatar
Not for long if their staff decide to take their talents and families elsewhere that's safe for them.
Avatar
Miscarriage care has also become much harder to get, since it's technically not much different from abortion. Bet maternal mortality has gone up as well.
Avatar
Probably maternity related disability and/or loss of fertility too.
Avatar
Avatar
Remember part of this is that you can no longer terminate a doomed pregnancy as long as the fetus still has a heartbeat.

“pro life” isn’t free, Lauren 😜 fml
Avatar
The US as a whole has the highest infant mortality in the developed world. You can't afford to increase it.
Avatar
How much of the “2% in the rest…” is allotted to states who’ve also banned abortion?
Avatar
So, the next step from those "pro-lifers" would be to incarcerate the unfortunate people who had miscarriages, right?

Or was it El Salvador?

Guess I have to say I am sorry to Equador then! 🙈

It happens, but thanks (at least it also urged me to look for myself about those cases) <3

texas does love its deathtoll that's obvious

Yeah I voted for the Democrat who promised to codify Roe v Wade in 2008 and for the Democrat who promised to codify Roe v Wade in 2020, now what
Avatar
Well don't vote for the party that wants a nationwide ban, you can start there.
