I think an important factor in musical taste is how much you care about lyrics and whether they make sense as someone who loves both Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” and Savage Garden’s “The Animal Song” I appear to fall firmly into the “lyrics can be total nonsense” category

I love and respect good lyrics I also love and respect “just vibes” 😂

As a Rob Zombie fan, I feel that lyrics can be gibberish as long as they set the right mood, like a tone poem.

I am so this type and it drives one of my friends absolutely crazy I have also discovered there are songs I can basically do as blindfolded karaoke and when people ask me what it’s about shrug and go “don’t know, never really paid attention to that”
Avatar
Yep there are songs I can sing the words to but I might as well be singing in a different language, they have never been processed by my brain as text. 😂

An actual conversation, abridged Them: … and Too Close is a song about an unwanted erection Me: Wait. That can’t be true oh my god it is Them: I didn’t see you look it up? Me: I’ve heard it a lot Them: But never noticed that?! Me: I thought it was figurative!
Avatar
I love good lyrics but they are in no way essential to create an absolute banger

As someone with hearing/word-processing issues, I don't even know the words to most of my favorite songs

Pumped up Kicks by Foster the people is a whole different experience depending on which type of lyric-enjoyer you are.

i’m ok with nonsense but not with cringey middle school poetry nonsense savage garden somehow passes this test but train doesn’t
Avatar
for the record, i said “somehow” bc i don’t objectively think it SHOULD pass, and yet it doesn’t make me cringe
hot take: without the inexplicable mandolin solo, "Truly Madly Deeply" fails as a song
Avatar
lyrics can be nonsense but they have to conjur a story imo...

I'm disappointed that nobody in this thread has mentioned Adriano Celantano's song "Prisencolinensinainciusol" yet.

The existence of Max Martin proves that lyrics don't have to make sense in order to slap

I've listened to "Jesus Built My Hotrod" too many times to pretend I care about lyrics being logical. But I do expect them to fit the tone of the song. Heard a slow, "emoshunal" cover of "Hey Ya" yesterday that just set my teeth on edge.
Avatar
I love Skinny Puppy. As long as they fit the tone, lyrics can be total word salad and/or incomprehensible. Did he say "ranted" or "rancid?" Meh, either one works, really.
Avatar
sometimes it is enough for the lyrics to simply act as a vibe enhancer I have for a very long time thought of music as a way to express something that words cannot capture. So if lyrics also try to do that, why would they make a lick of sense?

The Red Hot Chili Peppers approve this message

I'm a Gorillaz fan and I think that says everything.
Avatar
I have been a fairly intense Radiohead fan for their whole Bends-to-Moon-Shaped-Pool arc but will say 100% it’s better to keep to the vaguest impression of their lyrics
Avatar
I live Thom's lyrics but when anyone else tries to write in that style I can't bear it. Having read a few little things he's written that aren't songs I think that's just... how he writes everything.
Avatar
Music first if it’s music. Good lyrics are a bonus, bad lyrics can destroy the whole thing, The Cocteau Twins don’t get nearly enough credit for how great nonsense can be.

At the end of a job interview once, we got to the "do you have any questions for us?" bit. And I asked them to share their thoughts on this song. I was not called back.

Avatar
I have been told that even Yes fans admit the lyrics are nonsense.
Avatar
I love well-written lyrics and it’s a significant part of my musical taste across many genres. However, “Drops of Jupiter” somehow became about a friend of mine that passed because song + grief + unexpected moment = new touchstone song that will now always be about my friend. Brains are weird.
Avatar
i can lean that way as well i think very late 80s/early 90s grunge fostered that while i was developing musical tastes EDM reenforced that but i do look into lyrics if I get really hooked on a song
Avatar
but then some songs hit that much harder because of good lyrics, i dunno if i would have doubled down on liking Fiona Apple's Criminal had it not been for how the melody and lyrics complement each other so well
Avatar
but then I turn around and am really into Hybrid - Sinequanon (with Soon E MC) and i don't understand a word of french and it's a friggin banger

Pearl Jam was one of my favorite bands growing up, so. . .

But traveling to outer space is a metaphor for the main character going off to find herself, and the narrator is more in love with her than ever when she returns.

I love this video, it's so enby coded (I may be projecting)

i fucked and still fuck so hard with that album tbh haha

I gotta learn the guitar chords so I can party piece this shit

I'm in that camp solely because I love a lot of songs that were popular in my childhood, with most of those having been English songs that I didn't understand at all, so the lyrics were unable to matter to me. I thought "How Bizarre" was talking about "Parmesan", the cheese.
Avatar
the vocal version of "Awakening the Chaos" from BlazBlue is broken English but it still goes so fucking hard bonus points for having the guy who sang "Shadowbringers" and "Close in the Distance" from FFXIV in there singing broken English himself, even though he is most DEFINITELY a native speaker

For me there's a minimum bar that lyrics and music taken together have to clear, proportion doesn't matter.
Avatar
there's nonsense and then there's The Police's "Masoko Tanga" or any Hopelandic tracks from Sigur Ros
Avatar
I'm actually mixed on it, because while lyrics do add narrative depth to a song and at other times fill out a track flawlessly Some people need to stop talking and let the instruments talk for themselves, let them set the scene and emotional tone of a piece. Also savage garden is fantastic

Considering I wore this album out while maybe only catching every third or fourth word...

There's a fuzzy line between 'understandable' and 'comprehensible' where I like both of those songs but generally check out on metal that's mostly growls.
