Labour members have opened a petition to Wes Streeting. Anyone can sign it. "We, the undersigned, are calling on you to immediately withdraw your support for the ban on puberty blockers for trans young people." actionnetwork.org/pe... #transgender #LGBTQ #LGBT #Labour #trans

Properly shocked, asking round, to discover that AI is now just part of how office work is done. Pitches, press releases, internal emails. It’s “labour saving” apparently and means that overworked staff can get their jobs done in the time allowed, rather than having to work overtime.

It would be nice if the news cycle didn't constantly force me to be conscious of being trans. If being trans could just be something I am, and not something that I have to continue to think about, to mitigate for, to factor into my decisions and actions and even into what I say and where I say it

My contribution to the "Christ, what an asshole" coverage of J.D. Vance: How he reconciles his denunciation of divorce and running with a guy who on his third adulterous marriage. Hint: It's not divorced men Vance loathes. It's divorced women. www.salon.com/2024/07/16/s...

This is Sylvia Gonzalez. At age 72, she won an upset victory for city council after campaigning to oust the city manager. The mayor didn't like that. So he had her arrested & jailed. The Supreme Court is about to hear her case, which has largely gone unnoticed. A thread.

When I was raped in grad school, 1st thing I did in the AM was purchase emergency contraception. Thanks to that, I didn’t get pregnant. I was so lucky to be somewhere (NYC) that valued my reproductive autonomy. If I’d been sentenced to motherhood, I’d have jumped off the GWB. Cruelty on steroids.
This is now: Rape victims are being denied emergency contraception in medical centers and hospital emergency rooms. jessica.substack.com/p/idaho-wome...

I may have just been gouged nearly £100 for a Covid vaccine at Boots but I also got to earn Advantage Points on the spend, so who's to say if private healthcare is good or bad (Bad. It's bad.)

Puberty blockers. Cass didn’t suggest a ban. Outgoing Con minister did it anyway (no parliamentary scrutiny). But *only for trans kids*. Wes Streeting intends to make the ban permanent. Since NHS England discontinued their use in 2020, 16 trans kids under NHS care have taken their own lives.

This fucker also got sentenced today
Details from the sentencing of the Holly Willoughby intended attacker is horrific, but I genuinely laughed on hearing the bottles of chloroform didn't contain chloroform and he'd bought them from a homeopathic pharmacy.

I was thinking this myself earlier re: Farage 🍿🍿🍿
Now he's in parliament he has to accurately declare his financial interests & its an offence if he doesn't.

James Timpson being minister for prisons is inspired, really gives me hope for this government.

For those who don't know: this is James Timpson of Timpson key cutters/shoe repairs/dry cleaners. His company employs ex-convicts and even runs work training programmes in prisons. Genuinely inspired choice.
Oh, now that *is* interesting - James Timpson as minister for prisons, parole and probation. Dare we actually hope for something that might reduce recidivism?

Oh, wait, hang on - Parliament website says 5 or fewer seats and you get capped. Not uncapped when you hit 5 (I'm very tired and learning about short money for the first time, this could all be bollocks)
Each of the 99 votes by which Reform won Basildon South garnered them £32000 per vote extra funding over parliamentary term There should be 99 people who now regret funding a multi year treasure chest of misleading right wing propaganda It's vital to vote even when you know the overall result!

Ah, balls
5 seats rather than 4 seats will I think garner Reform a million rather than £350k in parliamentary short money, due 21 pence per vote, rather than £350k max, kicking in. @chadbourn.bsky.social

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Meanwhile over at the Telegraph, a leader writer wonders if a community taking part in the democratic process means its time to stop "handing citizenship out" to them. The absolute state of this.
The lobby did a generally decent job last night. But this language/mindset around British Muslim voting trends is profoundly unsettling and offensive.
