Do you trust a chat service run by Texas to not illegally scan all your messages for you arranging mifepristone to be mailed to you from out of state for your urgently needed abortion, then using parallel construction to find an excuse to arrest you? Because I fucking don't, and neither should you.

Most of them have a double letter too. I wondered if it was an attempt to fix ligature special characters (like the ‘coffin’ cracker joke that comes up every Christmas in the UK), but seems unlikely. glennf.medium.com/dont-coffin-...
Don’t Coffin Me, It’s Crackersglennf.medium.com A joke went awry because of ligatures, an element of typography that’s one of the many things Gutenberg pioneered. But why?

this is a truly weird country, where we find ourselves saying things like, "oh, is that all? oh he was just a normal spree killer? oh no worries then" like that's not a normal thought to have but here we are

Sixty-five years ago today, a clogged coolant channel led to the meltdown of 30 percent of the fuel elements in the core of the uncontained 20-Megawatt Sodium Reactor Experiment nuclear reactor at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles above Simi Valley.

The simmering rage against tech is partly because what they are doing is impeding the really cool shit that happens online. The internet rocks, I have made incredible friendships online that have lasted 15+ years, built a business, made art, and I hate how badly they've hurt being online.

we have to reckon with the fact that, in the past, a lot of people actually worked their way up to leadership positions. yes, yes, peter principle, not perfect, blah blah. but now, they all come straight from business school, where they are filled to overflowing with nothing but absolute bullshit
I'm reading memos and letters to the university community from presidents who are implementing draconian budget cuts this year (for a project I'm working on) and good god the amount of obfuscatory and weasel-wordy business-speak in these things is making me grind my teeth into dust

Things are so much worse at many of these places than it seems. There’s a whole bunch of R2 universities rn that have been mismanaged almost into the ground that are barely surviving, but you’d never know it from the outside. In some cases their US News rankings have actually gone way UP, bizarrely.

And a LOT of this has been caused by an entire class of corporate-style administrators who hollowed out these institutions prior to the twin shocks of trmp’s first term & the ongoing pandemic, making the schools soo brittle as US colleges became less desirable destinations both globally & nationally

I'm not going to litigate the specifics of this situation, but there are some critical lessons here for people who are thinking of running a labeler (and to some extent they're the lessons of T&S in general, but they are even more important given the paradigm of composable moderation).

This is a war between management consultants and the rest of the world. They have harnessed the tech industry as a means of prolonging the growth-at-all-costs rot economy. The poison of growth has taken big tech down a very dark path. They must have more.
Our tech overlords would like to make clear that your fantasies of universal health care and affordable housing are childish while their fantasies of infinite energy to power their AI girlfriends are reasonable expectations and will come true imminently. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...
AI is exhausting the power grid. Tech firms are seeking a miracle solution.www.washingtonpost.com Some data centers need as much energy as a small city, turning companies that promised a clean energy future into some of the most insatiable guzzlers of power

there are a lot of ways for the state to suppress dissident speech. one particularly bad one is by having armed agents of the state stand by and do nothing while partisan-aligned thugs or paramilitary groups beat you because of your speech, and then have the DA decline to prosecute the assaulters.

The U.S. Constitution is an extremely impressive document, but for the opposite reasons people think. It’s not the wisdom of philosopher god-kings, it’s something made by guys like you and me under immense pressure in a hot summer with no AC who didn’t even like each other that kinda worked somehow.
