The simmering rage against tech is partly because what they are doing is impeding the really cool shit that happens online. The internet rocks, I have made incredible friendships online that have lasted 15+ years, built a business, made art, and I hate how badly they've hurt being online.

In this version I'm cloud strife - continually confused, nonplussed by anyone's advances or cool tricks, continually hounded by nemesis who makes no sense but is really powerful and has a big stupid plan that sucks

So we can assume the Shinra board is like...hmm... Sandberg as Scarlet Zuck as Heidegger Elon as Palmer Thiel as Hojo (Or maybe Altman) Andreesen as President Shinra That feels right-ish.

I remember being told in the 00s that the internet was forever and now 20 years later I’m pretty sad about how much stuff is lost forever, be it websites that purged user uploads or message boards that never got indexed before shuttering.

very much this. it hurts my heart that communities and tools and channels of communication are being razed and... for what? for big piles of garbage no one wants.

So much of the best stuff to happen to me is from online connections. Long-term friends & relationships. Jobs that young me would shit themselves in joy over. Hobbies & personal projects shared w/ the world. But that don't make Rich People Money High Score Go Up More Faster Forever so *wet fart*

I've been in tech for more than four decades, starting as a young kid (so it's almost all of my life). I have more than simmering rage for the techbros who have turned a force for good into an anti-human cult.

I have loved tech since I was single digits years old and it has made me who I am today. I refuse to go down without a fight

I advanced in a challenging programming contest in high school and 30 years later I'm still in the field. Tech could make us all so much more comfortable and prosperous but instead it's this

I enjoy Bluesky. But I’d rather have not had my communities and friend support of over 10 years be destroyed by a mad man baby for no real reason at all.

If you told a space alien that everything now is computers that lie and can't do math while coders are out of work in droves, they probably wouldn't think particularly highly of us as a species & that's before they find out about mass incarceration

what if when the aliens try to talk to us they get an LLM

Generally I feel like if a flack has to resort to "you're too stupid to understand why this is good" they have perhaps lost the battle

Same. I’ve worked in tech all my adult life. 3 decades. Built and run a small IT company… We do good work which genuinely helps people and organisations in a practical way. The damage that is being done right now in the ceaseless drive for monetisation almost brings me to tears of frustration.

Big tech never assumes responsibility for anything it does or produces. The most recent manifestation of that is just dumping 'AI' on the world without caring about the vast damage these tools will do in the wrong hands. And here we are.

This is a significant part of what sold me on your show. It's easy to come from the left and a place of relative ignorance about tech and just hate it because Capitalism, and dismiss the nuance. It takes a lot more experience and knowledge to see the good and potential and lament what's going wrong.

oh fuck me running, i used tow atch all of the ask a ninja shit all the TIME When i was younger What do you mean that was 2006.

I'm still coming to terms with 2006 not being 5 or 10 years ago.

The rage against tech, for me, is that they think they are the Shamans, and think that if you don't like what they do, there is something wrong with you. And it is dehumanizing for a machine to TELL you what you are interested in.
Avatar
Yeah. I couldn’t agree more.

Social média used to be great for indépendant artists to promote our work and then both meta and Twitter changed the algorithms making it super difficult to even reach the folks who choose to follow us. I don’t understand who these tweaks are for because it also makes those sites less fun socially.
Avatar
Tech used to open the door to a new capability, let people in, and do their thing. NOW they have decided they are going to micro-manage your presence and activity online and it's stifling. And it's driving people away.
Avatar
yes. white skin + internet = super amazing funtimes.

I remember when ATHF made a whole episode about popup ads, and now legitimate search results are just as useless.

technology fundamentally is good for humanity technology is our defining evolutionary feature its business people and capitalist sociopaths that everyone is mad at

All I'm saying is I've been online since 1996 and I STILL can't print a web page without it coming out an 11 page jumble of frame borders, missing text, and blank edges.
Avatar
I was going to make a joke about being so old that you actually want to print anything but then remembered I’ve been online even longer.

Like Facebook basically dropped VR which is an actually cool tech for AIgen which takes significantly more energy and does actual harm. I would had rather them fully focus on VR, but no since Zuck can monopolyse it they just kinda shrugged

I go to a chat with a friend of mine every weekend, and have been doing so since about 1990.

But let's be honest the helicopter and golden toothbrush and all the other opulence of tech criticism don't hurt, either

It's just crypto and AI are the real problems, I think. Social media isn't great either but it has its place

What if I told you the new generation knows and is planning to fix it with decentralization and personal ownership It’s just starting with payments because that’s the easiest to fix
