Our tech overlords would like to make clear that your fantasies of universal health care and affordable housing are childish while their fantasies of infinite energy to power their AI girlfriends are reasonable expectations and will come true imminently. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...
AI is exhausting the power grid. Tech firms are seeking a miracle solution.www.washingtonpost.com Some data centers need as much energy as a small city, turning companies that promised a clean energy future into some of the most insatiable guzzlers of power

What incredibly small dreams.

We live in the Golden Age of No, They’re Not Smart, Just Clever, and pray we survive.

I’m not convinced they’re clever, either.

I would have gone with "cunning" instead of "clever", but point taken.

They're mean in the original sense of the word. Ungenerous, miserly, and small-souled.

Love that the "solution" is never "stop making this shitty thing no one wants and is destructive".

It's the absolute easiest and best solution and YET

I've said it before: If my company could make unlimited free energy, what the fuck would I need AI for?
Avatar
Tech AI centers should be given a quota of power every month, and once they reach it, pull the plug. Crypto farms should be forced to make their own power and not allowed on the grid.
Avatar
Seems like imaginary power would be just fine for making imaginary money.

[stares in snake oil fighting at Helion] I wish them the very best of luck and a titanic technical/scientific breakthrough. But, uh, having reviewed their stuff I ain’t gonna hold my breath. Stupid money and wishful thinking is foundation of any grift.
Avatar
I saw them at an undergrad physics conference. Once it was clear that their science was not open and my nerdy questions couldn’t be easily answered, my interest in them flatlined. I’ve always been one for openness, and appreciated particle accelerator facilities like CERN that provide that.

"It's just the deus ex machina that would mostly solve humanity's problems that's been a dream as long as nuclear energy has been used, how hard could it be?" -Somehow a real human person with the self awareness of an ant, adhering to the techbro stereotype flawlessly.

Companies like this, I always ask about the way to get around the obvious giant problem. Can't say? Evasive? Time to move on. Commonwealth Fusion Systems, when I asked, said straight up: HTS high-field magnets, size of reactor scales like 1/B^3. Clear enough! Would LOVE p-B11 fuel cycle, but...
Avatar
Ahhh yes, fusion will finally be achieved by ... [checks notes] the people who brought you the chatbot that became so racist after one day on the Internet that it had to be unplugged.
Avatar
I swear if we get workable fusion because some Silicon Valley failson needs it to power his virtual body pillow I will Be so pissed off

So he can get hard for a hard light hologram.

A miracle seems like a big ask when you could just turn the thing off and the problem is solved.
Avatar
An actual miracle would be to turn off the Internet and get humans off their fucking devices.

Scientist: What if we make an AI so horrible, nobody wants it, causing a mass luddite event? People give up using power hungry devices leaving more power for our AI fembots! Other scientists: Shut up, Chad! People need to subscribe to our AI based on their consumer output to fund the fembots. Duh!

Cold fusion is always 5 years off.
Avatar
Bold of them to go for 4 years off for this scam. Mixing it up a bit.

Wait, it’s March 2018? I thought it was March 2020.

That will somehow create more fuel as it also creates energy!

Will come true imminently** **with a “miracle solution,” apparently
Avatar
Aren't miracles the territory of religion, not technology?
Avatar
They treat tech LIKE a religion.
Avatar
Avatar
Don't worry, The ai itself we come up with a solution.
Avatar
Yeah keep posting jokes like this and AI will eventually be gamed into determining it as a viable solution. Can't wait to be put in a virtual world to power the grid that has pizza with white glue as a topping and my neighbor is a Pop Tart that drives a toaster to work every day.
Avatar
Have they tried nuclear? Even a relatively small nuclear device could easily take out an entire data centre.
Avatar
While Microsoft says they *expect to harness fusion by 2028*, I’m not holding my breath for 2028. I am, however, bullish as fuck on getting fusion up-and-running as soon as possible.
Avatar
Unfortunately there are some very fundamental issues with the whole concept of fusion energy that I don't think we'll be able to overcome in time for it to make a difference, meanwhile it being "around the corner" serves as an excuse to avoid taking any actually USEFUL steps.

"Some say impossible" (about their new energy-winning technique that would make this AI bullshit feasible) - I don't know, maybe instead of some, they could have said "serious scientists"?
