here's a poll of Brits asking who did the most to defeat the Nazis. lol redfieldandwiltonstrategies.com/less-than-on...

I get national pride, it was them against Hitler alone for awhile after all. but 6 percent France???

The Eastern Front just doesn’t figure much in our (American/British) WWII lore at all.

Clearly haven't watched enough Hogan's Heroes.

(And just to balance my reference to that lowest of low points in American cultural output, I am currently reading Vasily Grossman’s Life and Fate, which crushingly examines the sacrifices made by Russians…)

I watched quite a bit but I mostly remember Americans, Brits and French POWs.

I want to scream and point at this chart every time I see praise for the human stories of Godzilla -1.0, a movie about the need for Imperial Japanese forces to redeem themselves for failing to protect Japan against the big, scary Americans

Don't forget that a very large number of those "military" deaths were among the MILLIONS of people who farted crosswise on a Tuesday in Stalin's Russia. They were brought to the front, given sharpened sticks, told to charge the enemy, and shot if they didn't.

Who would argue that that French did the most to defeat the Nazis? The Resistance was heroic and brilliant, and the French are a wonderful and magnificent culture, but it's hard to form an objective argument that the French did the most to defeat the Nazis.
Avatar
Maybe that just means the UK population is 6% French people!
Avatar
This. Very proud we had an active Resistance and they surely were instrumental in toppling Nazi Germany, and at a dear price, but saying they did the most would be wild overreach.

France is my favourite country, other than my own. Warmest regards from Scotland.

Thank you! Scotland is incredibly beautiful and I hope to go back someday.

New Zealand, also known as "Hitler's Bane"

Stalingrad alone ought to have earned the soviets more than 6% smh
Avatar
21% "don't know" I mean...there's some options right there
Avatar
Seems fair. It's kinda a dumb question.
Avatar
There’s a good case to be made for Nazi Germany doing the most to defeat Nazi Germany, honestly. Not that we should remotely “hand it to them”: the better thing would’ve been to not need defeating, but for example no one else managed to engage their head of state in single combat.

A stab in the back theory, but it's the high command's fault.

Amazing thread & comments on the topic: bsky.app/profile/elia...

True enough, almost an "N/A" answer of sorts
The problem is that the question is vague. What does one define as "the most"? In terms of numbers of soldiers seeing action? In terms of money and effort spent? In terms of tactical/strategic importance of their operations?
It is essentially a troll survey, made only to get a rise out of people and notice the firm behind it. That's pretty much the only value.
Avatar
yeah, it's kind of a silly question. the correct answer is surely something like "US industry plus the Red Army"
Avatar
The cliche I remember hearing was “American money, British intelligence, and Russian blood”
With UK territorial advantage. It's a combination of things anyway, and this poll is just silly in all kinds of ways.
Avatar
“I can’t decide if it’s the US or USSR” is probably a lot of that 21% so…
Avatar
How are 82% of them objectively wrong
Avatar
Actually that is a neat trick since 21% put ‘don’t know’
Avatar
yeah i'd say 61 percent of the people are objectively wrong and 39 percent gave a defensible answer

France should've been occupied like Germany and their colonial possessions liberated

I have to know what is leading to putting New Zealand ahead of Australia.

They’re still mad about the ashes last summer
Avatar
You underestimate the number of British people who got their sense of the war from the sitcom "Allo! Allo!" where the French Resistance is about 6% effective.
Avatar
Avatar
and here's another rub... they were never 'alone'. Their colonial jewels, Canada, Australia and more, were with them every bloody minute they were 'fighting'. My grandfather left Canada in late 1939, months after 'England' declared war.
Avatar
This has to be “I misheard the question” or “I so don’t give a fuck leave me alone”
Avatar
It was them and a couple million from British colonies...weird how they're not on the list.
Avatar
equal to 6% Russia...
Avatar
If it said “Russia”, it might be fair, seeing how such a high proportion of soviet losses wasn’t actually Russian.
Avatar
The venn diagram of people who voted for Brexit and feel like they personally fought the Nazis during the Blitz and won the wider war is a circle

Feeling offended on behalf of the USSR is a weird sensation. They gave them the same amount of credit as France, who capitulated in mere -weeks- .
