About 80 % of students thought this was a swanky straw hat from the 1950s. Truth is that it’s the oldest Roman grasswork "Panama hat" extant, from Fayum in Egypt. In 2017 they radiocarbon dated it to 420-568 CE. Turns out the “Dark Ages” was really more about cool shade (Pitt Rivers Museum, UK) 🎩

I don’t believe he is on Bluesky, but these photos are via curator and professor Dan Hicks. www.prm.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-da...

And I bet the wearer used to saunter about offering contrarian opinions on the flooding of the Nile while addressing women as 'domina mea'.

By far the coolest non-lithic artifact I’ve ever seen. Ok, maybe the Neanderthal bone flute was just as cool, but in terms of soft material, WOW!

Great now I have to add Guys who think about the Roman empire on a daily basis to the list of people who I have to inform about the Difference between a Fedora and a Trilby hat... By the way that shape makes it closer to a trilby

Can't buy a shirt now that lasts for more than a few years of laundering w/o getting holes or dangling loose threads.

What's 5th Century Egyptian for "M'lady?"
Avatar
As Egypt was part of the Eastern Roman Empire at this time, 'domina mea' would be an acceptable alternative in the absence of a 5thC Coptic equivalent.

Those trade languages from that period and region are all Greek to me

That is an intricate weave

That’s some quality work. I have a baseball cap that I probably won’t get even three centuries out of.

Thanks for the inspiration! This example just became part of my chemistry lecture for Monday!

Fayum? More like dayum, amirite?

Huh. Found in Egypt. Is it an Egyptian, Latinate or Greek design? Can't see it being Persian, although something about it reminds me of... Something.

Makes perfect sense. Miracle is in the marvelous preservation. These r ppl who abs knew 2 things. How to weave grasses artfully. That 🌞 is dangerous to human life, & function.

Trying to picture this with a toga or kilt 😆

That’s crazy how stupid students are

Reflection of public schools. Not the students fault they were never taught history farther back than America becoming a country. I hated history until I was an adult and could learn about older cultures.

What public school are they from? I will call their dumb principal

Anytown, USA. Remember though if you aren't demanding they remove books, you're just a crazy person trying to groom the kids. 🥴 Oddly enough my son's online school had awesome history classes. Which explains why online school has always been under attack.

We toured the most elite private school in my area and they were using the same books I used 30 years ago. Like same covers and everything

So basically, the kids that didn't live through 9/11 will never even know it existed. Fabulous. 🤦‍♀️

Nice hat, quite a surprise that it is so old but the design criteria don't change much.
Avatar
Maybe the real "Dark" ages was when the knowledge to make these hats was restricted

Amazing. Beautiful. And ooooooooold

Lucky for the us the Romans had many very clever slaves busy making stuff while the Romans got drunk and wrestled each other.🤭😆
